Any reason being 4pm cut-off for grad ball tickets?

Postby inshaala on Tue Apr 24, 2007 10:36 pm

I went in to the general office today (it is open until 4:45) and was refused purchase of graduation tickets on the basis that i arrived at 4:10 and they had "stopped selling graduation ball tickets for the day"...
I then proceeded to look at the lady rather blankly in astonishment that the system would be so officious and that the fact that she was available to help me but not to get me a ticket because of the time really confused me, so i turned around and walked back out again, without realising how crazy it was.

So yeah - is there any real reason, like... i dont know - the system of booking is based on a server which shuts down at 4pm sharp... or someone thought there would be a lot of work for the staff to do between the hours of 4pm and 4:45pm without the vast hordes of graduands scrambling to get their tickets... and thus set 4pm as a cut off point to be followed religiously?

I am lost as to a valid reason, please someone - enlighten me.

Needless to say i will just have to accept it and go tomorrow before 4pm...

I think it was probably so they could count the money and put it in the cash office for safe keeping before the end of the day. Sometimes the cash office closes early - they have staffing limitations at present.

but then any transactions with the office wouldn't be allowed within that 45 minute timeframe... surely that isnt the case?

The booking process for grad ball is extremely complicated, and the close-up at the end of the day takes so much time. Because the General Office staff have to do the close-up for the grad ball, and then go on to do the close-up for the general office stuff (as grad ball is a totally seperate thing, seperate from the general office stuff it need to be kept seperate) the extra 45 minutes is required.

At least I think that is the reason.

Astrophysics is extremely complicated.
Negotiation with Iran is extremely complicated.

Hell, even the library booking service is extremely complicated in respect to any possible booking requirements of the gradball.

What a load of shite.

From what I remember last year - they used a book. The book was filled in with pen. There the left hand column contained the names of everyone who graduated. Then there was a column for a guest's name, and a column for ticket numbers! I guess this cash must then be - oh I dunno - counted!

Maybe there's a reason the staff there are not in astrophysics or diplomacy, then.

...but then again, that is only my opinion.

No No No, they have to write down your mobile number too. And that's a difficult task for anyone in University admin.

Thats really harsh! The ladies in the General Office are really nice and helpful, who are you to insult their intelligence? There really is no need. Don't be such a condescending git!

If for some unearthly reason you are only able to purchase grad ball tickets between the hours of 4pm and 4.45pm each day then that really is unfortunate, otherwise get over it!

I really can't believe how rude and nasty some people are on here about people they don't even know!

The 4pm cut-off time is clearly stipulated on emails circulated re. Gradball. If you're late, tough.

They obviously don't do it to be awkward - it takes a lot of time to reconcile cash at the end of a day.

Yeah - they have lots of security measures to make sure no one is stealing...

Oh wait!
