What the fuck did the university pay for that piece of shit? Couldn't they have had some comp sci senior honours guys do it as a project instead?

Funky flunky munky...
So someone asked me "What is it you do?". I thought about it for a minute. Then I thought about it a little more. All the while I probably looked like I was staring in to space, struggling for an answer. And I was. There was only one response I could really give.

"I make sure the shit stays off the fan."

Computer scientists are not web-designers and although a few people do insist on making websites as their SH projects they end up getting a grade reflecting this.

The reason almost all websites are shit is because they haven't been designed by web-designers. Web-designers should be closer to artists than they should be to comp scientists.

They are what architects are to engineers.

That site is pretty crap to be honest... aesthetically it looks basic and no more of a step forward than the old look. On the issue of coherence... the School websites seem to be either completely independent of the new look or still in the old website's style with the old headers and nav bars.

Also, there are a few instances where text is overlapping images (e.g. in Admissions).

Parted per saltire Argent and Azure, in chief a book expanded proper leaved Gules, and in base a lion rampant of the last armed and langued of the second, on a chief of the fourth a crescent reversed of the first between two mascles Or.

Um, what?

There's a dictionary of heraldic terms here: http://www.digiserve.com/heraldry/pimbley.htm

Might explain some of it!

No one seems to appreciate that one of the reasons behind this was to consolidate the corporate image. It's the websites first day, and no doubt school websites will catch up.

Secondly, as I was told when this came up at SRC, way back when, the site is infinately more expandable than the old one, and much easier to add to.

Out of all the pictures they could have chose to post on the front page of the websight they pick what are maby the only three pictures ever taken that make st. Andrews look like a downtrodden bit of suburbia

Who can we email about changing some things because I think that this websight doesn't cater to perspective students as much as it should. (I hate to say it but thats 90% of the point of a University Website)

who can we email about changing some things because as I said I think they need some new pictures and I also think they need a much more explicit perspective students link (other than just the visiting link)

The first link on the menu bar is "prospective students".

(Unless you did actually mean "perspective students")

Out of all the pictures they could have chose to post on the front page of the websight they pick what are maby the only three pictures ever taken that make st. Andrews look like a downtrodden bit of suburbia

St Mary's Quad, the Union and a graduation photograph. They don't exactly inspire thoughts of downtrodden surburbia. It's not as if they've put up photos of the Badlands.

however - the pictures themselves are compressed beyond any sense of the first impression of the site being a good one - the night shot is fuzzy (not to mention the slightly blurred people are not a good thing photographically or message generating(ly)... blurry night shot of students = drunken revellers), the grad shot has jpeg artifacts all over it and the one at the top is really blurry and devoid of any real colour... i know there are size constraints on the server but seriously those shots look bad.

Now that was just a quick adjustment from the original file... and they are about the same size in kb.

There are four and a half figures in that photo and I think the half a figure is probably the most interesting...

I don't understand why the bastard online advising bit won't even take my password and let me in- everything else will.
This is such bollocks.
