Graduation dress code

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone could tell me the dress code for families at the graduation ceremony and also for the garden party? How formal, and are hats required etc would be very handy to know.

Please excuse the poor coherence of this post, I am tired but need to know. I will otherwise forget come the morning.

at my boyfriend's post grad graduation we wore smart clothes, not many people wore hats. i wore a skirt from monsoon and a little black cardigan.

Some people wear hats, some don't...no-one in my family did. My mum wore smart skirt and jacket, Dad a suit, sister a suit, me a smart green knee length dress. They all wore the above to the ceremony too.

I've got a really lovely top I want to wear with a skirt this year (for my boyfriend's PhD graduation), I hope the weather warms up enough! At least it should be better than when I graduated one November!

Smart casual at the least. Families should probably stop short of the whole white tie thing, otherwise they'll risk upstaging the graduates! (And being confused with them, although the black gowns give it away a bit).

Interestingly the Academic Costume policies of the university state:

Officers and Graduates: wear the gown and hood and carry or wear the cap appropriate to the office or degree held.

Does this mean that if your parents graduated from this institution, they should by rights wear their gown and hood? I draw the distinction between graduates and graduands, which are given a separate section.

Why draw any distinction? There would not normally be any graduands at a garden party.

I guess if a family member was graduating in the same year on a different day then there may be, but not normally.

I was referring to the graduation ceremony itself, rather than the garden party. If one were a graduate, at the ceremony, should you wear academic dress also, was my question.

Completely forgot it was white bow tie only. The kilt shop gives you a black one with kilt hire for graduation, lucky I went in to confirm my order today!

you also dont need to wear a white bow tie if you dont want to if you are wearing a kilt (i dont think there will be anything wrong with a black bow tie), and yeah, the kilt socks dont need to be dark.
