My grandad has two foot of water flowing through the middle of his house right now. This is especially entertaining given that all of his business papers are now lost, as well as all his heart medication, his hearing aid and a lot of valuable furniture. The only people to help with the clear up are the neighbours - a couple with two young children and another on the way - and my grandmother, who suffered a stroke not too long ago. We're travelling down as soon as it's safe to go back into the house and helping with the clean-up job. He's been living there for nearly 25 years and it hasn't flooded once before.

You don't realise how serious this is until it affects you.

I don't think anyone denies climate change, what they deny is man's responsibility for or impact on that change. Climate change happens, has always happened, and will continue to happen - that is beyond dispute. The question is, is that change being speeded up or altered by the actions of mankind?

On a more light-hearted note, a friend of mine joked we were about to become the new Atlantis, but a very cut-rate, low-grade, typically British version, rather then the whole island being swallowed in a massive cataclysm, we'll be knee deep an things'll be a bit damp.

Strange the focus Oxford is getting for actualy no real flooding - OK some but limited. Now compare that to what happened in Hull, 1/5 of the town was flooded the coverage never got anywhere neear as existinsive as the 'OMG this actualy on the Thames and heading to our London commuterland' coverage we've seen this week.

I appreciate the fact what has happened in Gloucster(shire) is bad and does derseve the coverage but the coverage of the Thames has been far excise.

In contrast Skye is suffering from a drought and producing of Talisker has had to be stoped.

Incidentally, it's 33C out here.

The official stance (or my interpretation of it) is that 2006's El Niño and 2007's La Niña conditions in the south Pacific this year led to various knock-on effects (which I don't pretend to understand) have lead to a weakening of the Azores and Continental highs, and a deepending of the Polar and Icelandic lows, forcing the Jet Stream (Polar Front) further south, so that England is getting all the shite weather that the north Scotland often gets in summer , but because of geographic conditions the effect is much worse.

As for global warming, you cannot take any one event to be evidence of global warming. What you need to see is a trend. There does seem to be a strengthening of the Southern Oscillation that forms El Niño and La Niña if my memory serves me correctly, but there is no data relating this to the global increase in temperatures or to anthropological activity.
