Speaking of the IT Crowd, did anyone see Garth Marengies Dark Place? That was awsome and not just because Garth looked like my high school geography teacher.

I missed it the first time round but a friend found the episodes online. I loved it.

What's IT Crowd like? I am also thinking of getting The Mighty Boosh. I never watch TV and most of my favourite comedies aren't on now anyway (League of Gentlemen, Black Books, Blackadder) so I tend to be out of the loop.

well my name is earl is at least two years old, black books finished in 2004 so i don't think there's a lot of didfferece. this is just the stupidest, most malinformed poll ever. it's like someone (probably a green wing fan) watched tv for a week and picked out some of the lamest shows that nobody actually watches and decided it was a representation of modern british comedy. well it isn't, i barely watch tv and i know that. mock the week is a quiz anyway.

what about - mighty boosh, still game, peep show, nathan barley etc etc etc

I loved Green Wing (first series was the best though). Dark Place was fantastic and I would recommend it to anyone who likes black humour, horror, the eighties, dvd commentaries, leather jackets and scotch mist.

The IT crowd is about the I.T. dept. of some company and their geeky adventures. The closest series to it would be Father Ted, due to odd situations being used in both. Also jokes like

"Can I ask you a question"
"hang on...ready. Fire away."
"No, don't Google it!"

help to make it a classic.

Yes, it's a joke poll, Jesus God.

Although I've tried watching several episodes of Green Wing and never once laughed. It just kept seuging off into madness (like a woman inexplicably rubbing her breasts or a man flapping a hand on his back pretending to be a shark) complete with strangely sped-up/slowed down visuals. It broke up the flow of the (already slightly off-key) comedy and rendered the whole thing bizzare and unfunny to me. Marmite stuff, clearly. The Mighty Boosh suffers from a similar sort of ill, I feel - I rate it above Green Wing, but it's sometimes a bit too odd for its own good.

Star Stories is... unsubtle and sometimes misses a key but I've always found it very, very funny. Dec screaming "Still needs work you Geordie twat!" at Ant in a cut glass English accent literally had me rolling about laughing. And Boy George's dad running a kebab shop? Wonderful.

The IT crowd I always found very funny... although not *quite* as funny as Lineham's earlier stuff like Father Ted or Black Books - that said, Ted's better series were 2 and 3 and the first episode of the series 2 of the IT crowd last week was very good indeed, so perhaps things can only get better.

While I'm on the subject, I think the DVD of series 1 of Modern Toss comes out tomorrow, to accompany the start of series 2. Kaluh-kalay!

People who can not see the genius in the comedies i listed probably have a hard time laughing at anything made after 1973.

And most especially for the Mighty Boosh, I refer you to the latter comment there. (Above this sentence, in case you needed some help there). It's not my fault if you can't keep up with 'nu-wave' comedy like that. What would you rather; simplistic, excruciating comedies like 'Open All Hours' repeated ad nasueum on the BBC just so you know when to laugh? And so you don't feel too weirded out by the nonsensicalness of it all. (Sorry if the new word there freaked you out - its ridiculousness for you stick in the muds i guess)

There's a difference between being nonsensically funny and just being nonsense - it's a very fine line to walk and is probably more down to personal taste than anything else. I probably do have slightly more conservative taste - meh. Each unto their own, to be honest. I enjoyed Harvey Birdman and Aqua Teen Hunger Force but found Leave it to Brak a bit much most of the time. Similarly I liked Darkplace but aren't as fond of (although will still watch) Boosh.

I think there seems something rather childish about things just being funny because they are 'random' - if I think about the sort of humour I enjoyed when I was around 15 I probably would have liked The Mighty Boosh. I doubt however that I would have found A Little Bit of Fry and Laurie quite as hillarious as I do now - while it is comparatively recent, it's in quite a dated style.

And, as a final comment - Open All Hours actually has some very funny moments. Ronnie Barker is a genius with wordplay.
