LGBT in St Andrews?

Postby Rhapsody on Tue Nov 06, 2007 4:11 pm

Is there any sort of LGBT community in St Andrews? I'd expect at least general acceptance and awareness. Am I right?

I'd imagine that the LGBT society would be an excellent place to start.

Failing that I believe that the SRC also still has a sexualities and gender rep.

Email lgbtsoc@ - Jonathan, the President will be able to fill you in on what they do and when they meet, but I think it's Monday in the Mansefield, but as to what time, I'm unsure.

It's usually 8.30pm in the Mansefield!

Nope, none, whatsoever. Never a l, a g, a b, or a t person has crossed through the Royal Borough's gates.

And they don't control the place either.

The Gay mafia have been active as a group here since 1974. Do not anger them, even from across the pond....

I was wondering if some one could clear this up for me. I have heard that the LGBT here is sort of like a private club in which you actually have to be L.G.B.T. or Q. to fit in with and you aren't you will get funny looks from people. Is this true?
At my high-school I was really involved with the GSA and I met most of my best friends through that community and was quite disappointed to hear that.

"You'll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy."

As I understand it from my friends that are in the LGBT...well, debauchry is about right! Well, no, actually that's a lie. I honestly have no idea, but rumour mongering is always fun.

I'd guess it can't be too cliquey. If it were that bad then we'd need people like you to come in and clean this town up....

Also, some years later:

From my understanding it isn't like that at all, or at least it wasn't. I had quite a lot of friends who were LG or B (unfortunately none of them were T, despite my suspicions) and I'd occasionally rock up to the odd LGBT meeting, despite not being LGB or T.

I echo Mr Comedy's views, I get along really well with a lot of the Ls, Gs, Bs (again, no Ts) and have even been known to attend the odd after-party they throw too. Despite the occasional debauchary, I've found it friendly and welcoming, despite not being "one of them" as you say.

The Soc. goes through phases. In the early 90's there were more of The Straights than Gays. Things have gone to the other extreme and The Straights and Bi's were not overly wellcome for a while. Then went PC and tried to recrute token Transperson.

Now it is very inclusive and I never know who is what.
All are welcome.
