FastTicket at Leuchars

Postby b(b)b on Sun Nov 18, 2007 10:26 pm

To put it short: is there a FastTicket Machine at Leuchars where you can pick up your train tickets that you had bought online? I clearly remember there being some sort of machine but I'm not sure if it's the right type because the railway companies' websites don't have Leuchars as an option at the FastTicket drop-down menu... Since it also says that you can pick it up your ticket at a station other than the one indicated, I was thinking of just choosing Edinburgh and then doing it at Leuchars. Alternatively, any other ideas how I could get hold of the ticket without having to pay 6 pounds for mail delivery?

There is a relatively new ticket machine there of some sort - I presumed it was a FastTicket machine, but I can't say I know for sure. You could try phoning the Leuchars station and asking them, the number's on the National Rail web site I think.

As far as I know it's just a FirstScotrail ticket machine, nothing to do with the intercity companies' booking services. I haven't been to Leuchars since April though when I discovered the bus home to Glasgow was a third of the price and took the same time.

On the National Rail Enquiries site http://www.nationalrail.co.uk it says there is just a Scotrail machine, which it says is the same as my local station, and this is only for people who turn up.

You could go to Leuchars in advance of travelling and buy your ticket at the office where you can also reserve seats. Or you could use Dundee's FastTicket machine if there is one (or get someone else to)

You can buy tickets at the university travel shop if you wanted, they even arrange taxis for you to get to the station should you need it. Why not try them?

Yeah, if you go to the Uni Travel Service, they'll print your ticket there and then (and they know the tricks to get you the cheapest ticket).

I just bought my tickets home for Christmas through GNER - no booking fee, no postage fee.

The ticket machine at Leuchars is definitely not fastticket - also beware if you're buying tickets at the University Travel Service, pay by cash because even if you use a debit card, they'll charge an extortionate booking fee of about 10x the actual bank charges.

Are you wanting the ticket tomorrow like?

I have heard from more than one person that the uni travel service will just find you a ticket with no effort to scout around for the cheapest option, although I've never used them myself so I don't have personal experience. I always find relatively cheap tickets home on GNER's website.

I used to find that as well, so I always looked up the cheapest fare online beforehand, and read them the exact details when I went in to get the ticket. It doesn't seem to be easy to spot cheap fares on the text-based booking system they use, but one would have thought they would be good at it by now.

If your train is after 7am, you can pick it up at the ticket office at the station.

Well, seeing that I'm travelling on Thursday the normal delivery option is not available anymore and that's why I'd need to pay the 6 pounds delivery fee. On all the websites.

On the note of the Travel Service, don't they charge you 5 or 10 pounds for every booking you make?

And does anyone know if I could really just pick the ticket up form the trains station office? That would be convenient...

Last thing! Can I get a Young Persons Railcard in the Travel Service office?

According the posters around tow, there's NO booking fee at the Travel Service.

And yes, you can get your YPRailcard there too (that's where I got mine!) Just bring along a photo, and proof of ID (Matric card ought to do the trick).

Give them a call to check - (46) 2345

Hey,

you can definitely pick it up after 7am. I booked over the phone (there was no "collect" option online), got a ref number and was asked to take my credit card to confirm it.

Or if you prefer, you could just buy the ticket when you get there? :)

You can also buy one at DPLC on Logie's Lane. I did that once and didn't have to pay any kind of booking fee or anything. I'm told they will also do tickets, but haven't ever done that myself.
