i was sick and missed an exam and wanted to know how long is it usually before they make you sit the deferred exam?

"September (reassessment) diet 2008

* Medical Science examinations only: Monday 1 September - Thursday 4 September 2008
* For all other examinations: Monday 8 September - Thursday 11 September 2008
* Timetable published 7 July 2008
* The Online Resit Registration facility will be available here between Monday 7 July and Friday 29 August 2008. All students intending to sit examinations scheduled during this diet must register and, if appropriate, pay via this facility.

Students are required to make themselves available in St Andrews for the full duration of the January and May Examination Diets, and should plan travel and other arrangements accordingly.

Overseas non-graduating students who are enrolled for the first semester only may be eligible for early assessment before Christmas - please refer to JSA1 Alternative Arrangements.

For all Diets, students are reminded of the importance of checking the provisional timetable carefully. Whilst every effort is made by Schools and the Examinations Office to prevent timetable clashes, these can occasionally occur. Where such a clash is identified, students should contact the Examinations Office as a matter of urgency.

All Examination Timetables are published via the web only and are available via the Student Portal.

Individual Personal Examination Timetables can also be downloaded from the Student Portal for the January and May Diets only - please note that this facility is not available for the Reassessment Diet.
Registration for Degree Examinations

All matriculated students are entered automatically for the January and May degree examination diets. However, those students who are offered the opportunity to take re-sit examinations and / or deferred assessments at the September (Reassessment) Diet must register individually in advance for the diet, via the online registration facility. Where a re-sit examination is being taken, a fee is payable at the time of registration - details are given below. Students sitting deferred examinations must also register in advance, but will not be liable for a fee.

Reassessment Fees for 2008 are:

* £20 flat registration fee, plus
* £4 fee for every credit registered

e.g. the total fee payable for re-sitting one 20-credit module examination is £100; for re-sitting two 20-credit modules the total fee would be £180.

All students eligible for resit or deferred exams will be contacted individually once the results of the May examinations are available with further information about the registration process.

Similarly, those students whose studies who are out of time or whose studies have been terminated but who have been given permission by the relevant Faculty Business Committee to sit only the examination (via extended Permission to Proceed) in a particular semester must also register individually for the diet in question and pay the appropriate fee.

Absence from Examinations

Absence from Examinations due to illness should be reported to the Academic Registrar's Office IMMEDIATELY that you know you will be unable to sit an examination. This should then be followed up by a Self Certificate of Absence form and, if necessary, a medical certificate.

i was told that students would normally be able to sit the deferred exam for a module at a later date and this is usually as soon as possible and just after the exam diet has finished. does this mean september or soon now? (im a postgrad)

It depends on the department how they deal with a deferred exam.

They do try to do it as soon as possible after the missed exam, so i would think that missing it in January would mean sitting it well before the September diet. I deferred mine in May one year - for anthro i was just given two essays to write over the summer instead; psych was sat in september and history i redeferred so i ended up sitting it in fresher's week.

Yeh, I don't remember it being that much in 2002, i think it was like £1 a credit then.

I think unless youre extremely sick and in hospital even, then you should automatically fail for missing an exam. I think people just cheat the system and have more time to revise than others. Other people have exams one after eachother and then theres some people who just so happen to get ''sick'' on the exam day, yet still have the ability to be surfing the net and post on the sinner?

Right thats me told. I should never have been allowed to defer my exams due to death in the family. Of course I should have pulled myself together and just marched right into that exam hall and failed. Oh and all you lot who are currently hit by the norovirus, of course you might put off your classmates by vomiting and shitting beside them in the exma hall but on you go and sit your exam anyways.

How bloody rediculous. Sitting an exam ill or grieving not only screws over your own degree but sitting infecting others or sobbing in the exam hall effects others.

Of course the system is open to abuse, but what system isn't? But when I have had a doctor tell me I was in no way to sit an exam and she was willing to write a letter to the university to that effect I find myself rather unwilling to go with the "oh just pull yourself together" approach. I have spent too many years at this uni and paid too much money to recieve crap grades for sitting an exam ill than good grades if I had been well.

I have to say that this is the first exam period that has gone "well" (how I actually do in the exams has me developing a rash of stress responses) in the last 3 diets. Oh and I have my driving test this morning, right smack dab in the middle of the exams. Wish me well.

Sorry to hear that.

Don't get yourself down - sometimes you actually SHOULD fail but find that you pass. The important thing is that if you have a blip just ignore it and carry on regardless. Good performance after a poor start can do miracles for you.

Lol thanks. My instructor is blaming the fact the date is in the middle of my exams. I damn near failed on the reading of the licence plate before getting into the damn car cause I have strained my eyes from studying. Went to the opticians though and he said my vision is fine.

Instructor is most purplexed at the way I managed to screw up doing things that I have never screwed up on before. Oh the joys and stresses of having a wee man beside you with a clip board. The tester seemed genuinely sorry to fail me too.

Just hope that I can get another date as soon as possible. Would even settle for a cancellation tomorrow if I could. Really. Really, really need to get this out of the way. According my family you are not a real grown up until you have that pink bit of plastic.
