The Subway stink

Several people have made the same point on the McDonalds thread about the horrific smell pumped out by Subway; it's something I've agreed with ever since the place opened, and to this day I have to hold my breath every time I pass the place because it makes my stomach churn. Now we're all aware that other people share our views - it's not something I'd ever discussed with anyone, because frankly I don't consider it a fit subject for polite conversation - I just wondered whether anyone has ever complained about this, who to, and to what end?

Many of us care deeply about trying to combat environmental pollution that damages the planet, but this is an even more insidious form of pollution because, as unpleasant as it is, it seems nobody has been prepared to take a stand against it. Isn't it time that changed - that we stood up and said, to the shop itself, to the Community and to the Local Council, that the situation is unacceptable?

I like the smell too. I wouldn't like to live right above it, but it's not so bad when you're just walking by the place. As for what it is, it smells just like Subway bread. It's just the smell of yeast, isn't it?

The smell from that cheese shop in south street turns my stomach. Can't they keep the door closed? Or at least get the rotting fruit back that they used to put in baskets outside the place to try and mask it.

Worse than subway surely?

I love the smell from the cheese shop, but then i love cheese.

I dont love the smell from subway, but then i dont like the smell of very warm sweaty sandwich meat.

The cheese shop only pours out a few feet, you can smell subway from the keys.

I dunno, I think the Subway smell is pretty much a walking past phenomenon. The cheese is pretty pungent, and while I hate the smell, I like it's cry of 'hey! I'm a REAL cheese shop'. It's like, I hate the fishy smell of the harbour, but that's what makes it a REAL harbour. If you see what I mean. *cough*

I'm another one who doesn't mind the smell one bit and actually thinks it quite nice, definitely a walk-past thing too.

Harbours shouldn't smell of fish, seaweed pershaps. Fish houses should, and the fresh fish smell of say, the south street fishmongers, is a wonderful smell. The harbour fish smell is that horrible mixture of rotted rather than fresh, warm rather than cool and mixed with fetid sewage rather than with ice.

I haven't bought a nice bit of fish from the fishmonger in absolutely ages thinking about it.

I used to love the smell of Edinburgh train station. It smelled like warm baking bread. Someone said there's a brewery nearby-- is there?

Yes, you can smell the brewing smell (if anyone is interested in recreating it, pour boiling water over wheatabix) from almost everywhere in town.

My favourite smell is Tesco bakery (proper one, not like in st Andrews) at around 6AM when they are baking the cookies. That smell made working there worth it.

Anyway: cheese shop = good; Subway = bad. I used to think the Subway smell wasn't too unpalatable, but it seems to have changed over the years. I was in town again recently and had a good dose of both. Mmm... cheese...

Subway smells lovely, the Cheesemongers have made me vomit into my mouth on occasions when my stomach is in a "delicate" place.

But really, the foulest stench in town is of course the abattoir on Largo Road when it's busy burning bone or what have you.

I used to live right next to the slaughterhouse and I never once had a complaint regarding any smell from the place. The mournful mooing some nights could be heard though.

Subway always just smelled like yeast and baking bread to me. Considering I bake most of my own bread these days and am completely used to the smell of yeast, I find it hard that anyone would complain. That's the smell of real food being made. The quality of the non-bread ingredients is more worthy of complaint about Subway than the smell of the baking bread. The bread is the one thing they get almost right...

having worked there (ucch).. some people think subway pumps it out on purpose.. nuh uh.. its just the smell of cooking cheese and herbs on the italian herb and cheese bread. which, by the way, along with the parmesan bread isn't vegetarian.. (the parmesan on both contains animal renate, and veggies used to get really pissed when i told them if they had their veggie patty on that bread it wouldn't be veggie any more... i'm a veggie and would have liked to be told!!)
the worst thing is the chicken. but the cleanliness standards are really good. as far as it goes, you could do a lot worse than subway...
