Lactose-free food in St Andrews?

Postby Pudding Queen on Thu Feb 14, 2008 11:57 am

Has anyone found lactose-free products other than soya milk anywhere in town? I'm struggling to find anything and all I can think about is cheese.

Any help (and cheese) would be appreciated!

there is cheezley being sold in holland and barrett. it has no milk in it. or tesco do lots of free from things. like soya yoghurt. or the health food shop next to new look sells chocolate soy milk. and so on.

I have issues with gluten, so not quite the same, but Morrisons does a wonderful range of free-from food that actually tastes like, you know, food. I know they have a gluten and lactose-free cheese sauce mix in sometimes, which might help your cravings. :-)

I'm lactose intolerant and have such issues finding anything good here. You can find some stuff in the various health stores, but it's generally not that good. For the most part the "cheeses" taste like plastic, but I suppose they can be alright if you're really desperate. The Alpro soya stuff is good, though: yoghurt and custard and little dessert thingies. But when it comes down to dairy-free cheese, though, it's hard to find! Oh and finding a butter substitute's fairly easily done even in tescos.

There is a really good table here showing lactose tolerance by race/region.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lactose_in ... e_by_group

Dutch 1% intolerant, Native American 100% intolerant.
Us Brits are at 5-15%.

Thanks, everyone's been really helpful. I found dairy-free chocolate buttons in the shop next to new look yesterday and the black magic equivalent of creme eggs have no milk content, so that solves my other craving! Will try Sheese soon too.
