More affordable accommodation for St Andrews!

Postby James Shield on Sun Mar 02, 2008 11:03 pm

Fife Park has to be redeveloped, and it's not going to be cheap. It's very unlikely that it will remain affordable, but that doesn't mean an end to affordable accommodation in St Andrews.

The University has said that it is determined to uphold its commitment to maintaining 500 affordable beds, but we don't think this is enough. We currently have approximately 750 affordable beds - if anything, this number should be increased, not decreased. St Andrews already has a poor reputation when it comes to access for students from less economically privileged backgrounds, which has been consistently flagged up by organisations such as the Sutton Trust. Failure to commit to an increase in the provision of affordable accommodation will only prolong this reputation.

For these reasons, the Students' Association believes the University should increase its affordable housing commitment to a new level - 1,000 beds in the lowest quartile of UK student rents. We believe in a University that accepts only the best students, but are concerned that economic considerations currently act as a barrier to some excellent students from certain backgrounds. It's time for a change.

For more details and information on what you can do, see this news article on the Union's website:

I thought the uni had planned to lower the cost of Andrew Melville in order for it to fall into the low-cost bracket (it can't be knocked down due to architectural significance so it makes snese).

Today I applied for a few University Managed Accomodations after viewing a lot of them. Many of them are in great locations (Alfred Place, South Street, South castle Street) and very modern, spacious, well equipped and so forth. All of the 2 beds were around £2889. There certainly is affordable accomodation in St Andrews. It's just a matter of luck if you find/get them.

Thats the problem. Albany, for example, is ridiculously cheap for what you get. £2000 a year with all bills paid, its absolutely brilliant. No wonder its so hard to get into.

Don't mean to rub it in but I and my house just got accepted for our third year in albany! (does the hula dance)

Yes if you can put up with the soviet bloc architecture Albany is certainly the place to be. I'd like to list all the benefits but the list would be too long and I've got a lecture to get to.
