I would argue that it was a bit out of order of you to be honest. The person who posted the drinks deals was a barman who just got a job there.

What would he stand to gain by having more people come to the bar after reading his post?


It was clearly a post designed to inform sinner users about the various things that were going on at that venue, not to increase revenue of the venue.


He didn't even start the thread himself, he was just replying to another user's query. To think that there was commercial intent behind it is ludicrous. All you have succeded in doing is making people post more on this thread saying "where have the details of the rule gone?"

So someone asked me "What is it you do?". I thought about it for a minute. Then I thought about it a little more. All the while I probably looked like I was staring in to space, struggling for an answer. And I was. There was only one response I could really give.

I think that plan is n the pipework. But in order to get the space filled with relevant local stuff it would require pro-active customer seeking.

Sure. I wasn't suggesting that the useless comments like "Oh, how wonderful!" etc etc had any merit. Only that the one listing the drinks deals was actually of use to users of this forum.

The sinner is not, and never will be a cash cow. It is a student forum for people to post useful (and sometimes hateful) messages to each other. If it happens to make the owner of the website a few pounds on the way then thats fine, of course, and is the nature of business, but to actively seek to block a post useful to users is like shooting yourself in the foot.

If thesinner is a business the primary objective should be to be a forum to post useful stuff for people in St Andrews, then the revenue stream can be built onto that.

If you decide that the primary goal is to make money, then you will always hinder the sub-goal of being a forum to post useful stuff for people in St Andrews. Without full completion of that sub-goal the main objective in this model becomes infeasible. This is because the attraction to the consumer (being able to post useful stuff about the town) is lost, and hence the page views go down.

Otherwise, where shall we stop? Advertising of Hall Balls? Sports club cake stands? Boozeday Tuesday? Bar Room Quizes(Union and elsewhere)? Live Sports on TV? "What's your favourite bar"? Where can I buy X? When does the new Y open?

Looking at that list, it badly needs updated. Some of those pubs don't exist or have changed ownership since it was written. Also a critique does not have the same effect as someone saying 'Look at our merchandise and the money you could save.'

Societies, and student events are advertised on the sinner cos it's a student board and some of these groups can't afford to advertise across town. I'd imagine a new bar could afford to do that, all it'd need is a few pamphlets or someone standing outside handing them out to achieve the same effect. Admittedly I can see why you'd prefer to try to get a free ad rather than freezing your nuts off handing out fliers but again we have the slippery slope. If we let new businesses advertise for free then other business would consider putting their adverts up, and we ended up with every 10th post being a drinks promo.

Yeah it was me who posted and I only work for the rule as a bar man, not advertising or anything and I just thought I would share what I was told but I guess it is kind of advertising in a way, didnt really think when I posted.

Anyway just an update the 'grand tour' I was expecting today wasn't much more than last time, I seen the back bit (at the end next to the toilets) and that seems pretty much the same as before with the exception of a mini-bar (I think, or possibly just a food till) at the end and its much lighter and has a warmer feel, again lots of wood, also there is an exit to a beer garden at the back (not sure if that was in the Gin House before or not. There was also a lot more booth seats this time and the place looked better now that the boxes and rubbish have been moved. The fridges were installed today and everything is pretty much good to go. They are planning a dry run (staff only) Thursday and Friday and if everything go's to plan its still set to open on Monday (31st). Ill let you know more as I know, but I'll have to be a bit more careful not to advertise it too much next time.
