May Ball is meant to be on Castlecliff, where Oktoberfest was. Or so I heard. All will be revealed soon I'm sure.

I saw posters on the desk in the General Office for the May Ball which said it would be in the Quad. Let's hope that it won't be as poor value for money as the Opening Ball.

No you didn't - there's no mention of the quad on those posters.

ok.
lets end this.
I, after much investigation, have found out the following.
The "Charity" May Ball will go ahead. It will be held at Castle Sands. After the Initial Live Goat Sacrifice, will involve ritual killings of 20 virgins, (look out KK committee), the drinking of their Blood, then the Mass suicide of all KK members in the Step Rock Pool.
Oh if Only.

The May Ball is booked to be held on the area of grass behind the quad, although sallies quad will be the main entrance. As you like it will still be on but will finish early and the ball will start slightly late to accommodate both (assuming the university agrees this arrangement).

The reason for the change is apparently because 'somebody' booked kinkell farm for the same night as the May ball was planned, just to spite the KK

of course this could all be rumors too...
hopefully wont get in trouble for this one

The May Ball posters cite the venue (slightly absurdly) as 'the grounds of St Salvator's College'. One of the bands on the poster - almost too perfectly - is called 'Official Secrets Act'.

union always does the bar. as far as i'm know the new licensing laws don't allow giving away unlimited amounts of booze after buying a ticket.

The Union is far too responsible to be associated with a free bar. It's too much of a risk to their licence.

Because its on university property they are unable to give free drinks away all night. Thus the bar will be a paying bar to adhere to the university's safe drinking policy that they have on all their premises. There will be drink provided at the dinner which is £80 I believe.

On Friday 9th May, The Gentlemen of the Kate Kennedy Club will be proud to present an entirely different May Ball, set right at the heart of the University. In the grounds of St Salvator's College, with dinner in Lower College Hall, Champagne in the Castle, dance tents on Lower College Lawn, Gold and Black experience on St Salvator’s Lawn, and our unique village fête in the Quad, it is guaranteed to be the highlight of this year’s social calendar.

Tickets from £30, outside the library, Wednesday 23 April, 12 noon.

Way to put a spin on words there, congrats!

The pricing does make you wonder why you can't have all those pretty things they offer for the 30 pound tickets also at the opening ball, which in my memories costs about as much?

St Salvator's Lawn is where? In front of St Salvator's Hall? Isn't that the Principal's Lawn?

I'm just looking forward to As You Like It. Who needs the May Ball when you've got Shakespeare? And it's apparently cheap as well!

Quoting Bizarre Atheist from 16:03, 15th Apr 2008(The Charities Campaign and its associates, just fyi, almost always give over 95% of their ticket prices to charity)

You pro-Union sinner types. Always criticising; never thinking for yourselves.

The reason the Charities Campaign can give "over 95%" of its ticket price to charity is because the Charities Campaign's events are fully subsidized by the Students' Association, because it's a SUBCOMMITTEE OF THE UNION, and the Union is in the business of making money twelve to sixteen hours a day, seven days a week. Thus, the CC has absolutely no overhead costs; all it needs to do is run a cash register and take half of what is paid in, put it in a bucket, and deposit it at RBS the next morning. Alternatively, they can just hold a crappy event like a fun run, which also has no overhead.

By comparison, the Kate Kennedy Club is a private group with the primary aim of making the ball a really fun event, which is expensive (well in excess of £30,000 quid), and a secondary aim of trying to spin off any profits made to charity to improve town-gown relations. When you have to first earn £30,000+ (depending on the year the numbers have been much higher than that) before you can start giving money away, by necessary implication a smaller proportion of the ticket price is going to be able to go to charity. That's a no-brainer.

The KK still manages to do it, though.

If you want to criticise the KK for not giving more money to charity, I suggest that you propose replacing the University's big spring ball with a night time 5k fun run, and see how that flies with the majority of students. I think you will find (and there is nothing morally wrong with this position) that the nice year-end party with one's friends will win the day here.

Just a thought.
