Nearest Barclay's?

Postby Cinema on Mon Jun 29, 2009 3:57 am

Hey guys,

Barclay's is the sister bank of my bank in the US, but it seems there is no Barclay's in St. Andrews... Anyone know if there is one nearby?

According to the Barclays Bank Branch Locator, yes there is.
I hold an element of surprise

You can use HBOS or RBS cash machines. The closest Barclay's branch is in Dundee - about 12 miles away/ 30 mins by bus.

I'm guessing you use Bank of America?

When I was in St Andrews, it was free to use the RBS ATMs with a BoA debit card -- unlike the US, there are no 3rd-party ATM surcharges in the UK. Bank of America added a 1% surcharge on top of the inter-bank exchange rate, which is as low of a rate as you're going to get anywhere.

I believe that the surcharge was higher for the debit card for non-ATM transactions (closer to 3% if I remember correctly). Bank of America's credit cards don't all use the same exchange rate -- I believe that Visa added 3%, while American Express adds 1%, presuming that you can find a merchant who will accept it (most major chains, and the occasional restaurant, although you'll have to explain that your card has no chip).

If you need to make a deposit, there's an address that you can mail your cheques to, which should cost less than a trip into Dundee.

This was in 2008. Things may have changed since then.

Thanks for the responses all.

I assume the Barclay's Branch Locator is wrong then? I checked it, but it didn't seem to be an actual branch, just an ATM or something.

Thanks for the rundown and advice Schmod. Especially good to know I can mail in checks.

The Dundee address is definitely a branch (it has an ATM too), but that's your closest option unfortunately.
