Ok right! I'm fed up with this! I posted quite a serious thread only yesterday and although I've had about 9 replies only 2 or 3 actually stuck to the point of the thread. The rest were about my spelling and then about the bloody history of txt spelling!!! For Gods sake people!!! This is a message board! It's not like we're writing bloody English essays! Of course people are going to spel badly or use txt spel!!! If u've got a problem with it stop griping on someone elses thread! Plus most of the stuf written on the sinner is probably done when people are totaly pissed so its not like they care how they spell stuff! So just stop nitpiking and stik to the point!
Thank u! (And if neone comments on my use of spelling in this thread I swear to god I will find u and cut off ur fingers! Savvy!)

At the risk of getting my fingers cut off - if people were simply taught properly in the first place, that is taught how to spell, then this would never arise. If you know how to spell properly for your English essays - then why deliberately get it wrong when posting on here? Seems a bit odd to shift down like that.

That's the point! I only made about three errors in the entire post! And everyone acted as though my thread was illegible! (plus, yeah Ok I'm not the most amazing speller but its not complete jibberish!)

Okay, maybe they shouldn't have started the argument on that thread, but txt speak really annoy's me. There is an good reason for using it on phones but when you are typing it doesn't take much longer to add the extra letters. I mean 'stuf'! Why?!! All you need to do is press the 'f' key one more time.

Its just very annoying to read, and if you want people to be sympathic to your point then you are not helping yourself by typng lyk sum moron wi 2 brain cells.

Fair enough in the thread you are talking about you didn't use it that much, but do you think people will agree with you if you deliberately annoy them in this thread. Simple answer.. NO.

There are three different things: Genuine spelling/grammar mistakes, Ignorance of the English language, and Txt sloppiness.

Examples in that order: Occasional mixing up of letters or accidental typing of "it's" instead of "its" doesn't bother me. Frequent use of "your" instead of "you're", and mixing up of "too and to" really bug me, and I have even less time for "u" and "ur" being used instead of their real equivalents.

Maybe he had 'excellent' before, and replaced it with 'good', but forgot about the 'an'. Genuine error.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, everyone ought to read "Eats, Shoots & Leaves" by Lynn Truss. It will give you much greater respect for the humble apostrophe. My views on spelling are well known, so I'll add no more on that. I'll finish with an example from said book of a misplaced apostrophe that caused me to guffaw aloud on a train...

You should really capitalize your sentences. Not that I found it annoying.

Also very useful for checking grammar/spelling issues is Bill Bryson's "Troublesome Words". It's in a useful reference format too.

Text speak keeps the cost of sending messages down. If adding in that extra 'f' is going to cost me an extra 12p and also annoy the receiver of the text by filling their inbox I'm going to leave it out. And write u instead of you and shorten everything to fit as much as possible into one message. As long as it can still be understood what does it matter?

you should also remember that the sinner is a conversation, and while it's nice, threads don't always stick to their original topic.

You know what annoys me?

Arts students assuming that science students have a lesser capacity for spelling and/or use of the English language.
I mean I realise you might know who Amac is and thus may know that he is a science student. However if you dont know who he/she is, then simply making a spelling mistake does not automatically make one a science student. As a science student with a large number of arts student friends I know for a fact that they have smaller vocabularies than I do. I'm not boasting, they simply do.

Are arts students under the impression that we never read or write anything? Because if that is the case I think you will find yourselves sorely mistaken.

That's true. Your thread was let off lightly actually. Just think of the guy who started this thread:
http://www.thesinner.net/messageboard-v ... hread=8522
11 pages and only one of the replies is relevant (if that). Doesn't stop it from being an entertaining thread though.

What makes me laugh is when people want to make a point about spelling and/or the english language, they suddenly start writing in perfect Queen's English. They even start saying things like "does not automatically make one a science student"

One wonders if one uses one at all in one's life? hehe
