Good to see good, solid, academic debate going on! Makes me proud to think that some Sinners may have some significant influence in the world in a few years' time.

...but then again, that is only my opinion.

When has modern politics shown itself to be about 'good, solid, academic debate' Gubbins?

Why don't you furnish us with your own wisdom then, if you'd be so gracious.

This is quite interesting, if anyone is still interested in the original debate.

The point about independence solving the pitiful rate of business start-ups in Scotland and the brain drain south is surely not solved by independence. The reason the UK (and mainly the south of England) does well out of free movement is that the rest of the EU speaks English. Graduates from Scotland or entrepreneurs can still move south because there will be no more limit post-independence than now. Probably more incentive given that for the short term Scotland would have to make up lost income from Barnett and deal with the loss of jobs from UK public sector employment.

As for dealing with health issues etc that was the point of devolution, is there any great reason why NHS priorities in Glasgow under the Scottish parliament would be significantly detrimental compared to a Scottish republic.

As an aside I did read somewhere that the oil fields do not entirely fall in what would be "Scottish" waters as the border is not 90 degrees and the line is taken from there and drawn outwards. Although if I am wrong I am sure someone will point that out.

Rarely, and it could be argued that that's what's wrong with the world.

Why don't you furnish us with your own wisdom then, if you'd be so gracious.

I'm tempted... but I've had enough derision, name-calling and lambasting for one week: I've been teaching undergraduate Physics classes.

Oh go on, then. My wisdom is (slightly tongue-in-cheek, which makes it really difficult to talk), how can we manage an independant Scotland when we can't even decide on the time of day without flag-waving numpties crawling out of the woodwork and shouting at each other (no intentional reference to folks here).
