Were there a load of music videos this year? I missed imovie fest this year due to having loads of essays etc., but I remember really liking the music video they had last year - I think it also had a band interview with it? Is there anywhere I can watch the new videos?

I think what Tony was referring to was the fact that many of the finalists had very little scripting, opting instead to use a music/montage technique to tell their respective stories.

I don't think there's a website for the movies yet. Hopefully they'll be setting that up in due course...

Guantanamo Baywatch

Postby JeffCarnage on Tue May 11, 2004 1:00 pm

I think that Guantanamo Baywatch is one of the worst pieces of film I have ever seen. It probably wasn't shown coz it is too rubbish.

However, it was better than some of the films shown on the evening. All I can say is cheer up St Andrews students! Next year make some happy films!

4 years in 5 days was so funny, but I also liked 'waterfall.' I thought it was haunting and beautiful.

Hah. All right, Rennie - yes, 4 years in 5 minutes was good and would have made my top three from the films shown there.

imovie fest

Postby jeremiah on Tue May 11, 2004 3:01 pm

unlike most of you i thought last night was a complete dissapointment compared to last yr. of the first nine movies i thought six were boring as hell and did not in any way deserve ot be up on the screen. to start it off, the one with the girl in the white dress was so damn boring and cliche that i couldn't help but put my head between my legs. and the only reason it was shown, as i was told by an imovie rep, was for the soundrack. secondly, what the hell was the sword one? it was a guy rambling on for a few minutes then chopping shadows heads off. um, good cinematography, should have been shown in the union. thirdly, the one with the poem; as this was playing i looked to my left and my right and more people were laughing for this movie than any other; come on! fourthly, the one with the guy painting the dead girl; um this couldn't have taken more than an hour to shoot and less than that time to edit; crap. fifthly, the one with the people chasing after one another; oh how original. the only funny thing was the fat guy in a thong and that's always funny. and the sixth awful one was to bad to even remember.
the only ones that made any impression were the pie guys, kung-fu and 5yrs in 4 days. the pie guys were funny for the last 2 minutes but the first three were way to slow. this movie should have gotten to the punchline a whole lot faster. 4yrs in 5days was a good idea but was not all that interesting....it looked more like a week in 5 minutes. and thirdly, the kung fu movie with the halls, etc was a really good movie. the cinematography was great as well as the effects and the dialogue as well as confusing everyone as to where the movie began and ended- GREAT JOB!
as for the three winners: the last broadcast would have been a great concept.....if it had not been done last then a yr ago in another british movie, 28 days later...i think this movie was awarded because the guys woke up at 5 in the morning to shoot the town empty. if i knew it were that easy i may have done the same. the one with the bullys was an ok idea. a lot was fit into 5 minutes but the movie just kinda ran on and on. it wasn't exciting or sad or funny....and for a movie to be good it has to fit into at least one of these categories. as for the winner, good special effects, good cinematography, funny idea (although the same thing was done by another group with geoffrey the giraffe) but not as good as the kung fu or a few that i saw in the union.
as for the movies in the union- most were absolutley terrible but i definitely saw a few that were quite good and definitely deserved to be shown on the big screen including the one with the talking golfball (funny as hell and a great idea) as well as the one with the guy locked in the house for a week. it was funny with great music and cinematography.
that's my 2cents

straigh to video

Postby jane on Tue May 11, 2004 3:01 pm

The reason that I think my team's video should be people's choice winner (I didn't agree with all the choices for tonight's movies, nor the order and choice of the top three...) is because I thought it was best received by the audience(there was a lot of laughter and applause in comparison to the other movies), and i really do like the movie my team members and I made - I know i am biased for it, but i am still being rational.

comments are welcome ;)

I think that the only funny bit of Straight to Video was the Halls thing and even that went on too long. It was very computer geeks humour and I think if you put that in the cinema's the general population would not really appreciate it. However the special effects were wicked.
Also liked the Sword in teh Sand and i thought Love Factually adn Donald where's your troosers? should have got into the top 12.

I don't understand what you mean by 'computer geeks humour', could you please elaborate on that?

Online versions

Postby Squirrel on Tue May 11, 2004 5:12 pm

I'm trying to get hold of all the movies. While I'm tracking down the people responsible for Campus Movie Fest, figured I'd post here too...

If anyone from any of the teams has a complete copy of their movie on computer, can have a copy of it? I can drop around with a laptop to copy it on to, or can arrange online storage space if that's easier. I'm looking for uncompressed movies ideally, as I'll be doing my own DivXing of these.

So, if you can give me a copy of a movie, please e-mail jrn, thanks!

I really enjoyed the film guys, you did a great job and in my humble opinion you should definetly have been in the top three.

I think jane may have been referring to the DDR bit of the film (which I found hilarious, incidentally).

that halls/kill bill film

Postby too many students, not enough library on Tue May 11, 2004 8:33 pm

the straight to video film was good - of course - but it was right that it didn't win because it looked like they had quite a lot of fancy technology stuff going on. Obviously I don't mind the use of effects in itself (and it was definitely good that it won that award), but the top three films - especially the hamster one - demonstrated imaginative use of the more basic equipment - which is sort of what the whole thing should be about. This isn't Cannes, you know.

Personally, I liked "Straight to video" best. But I also liked the Bully one. The little boy was really cute. I wasn't to much into the waterfall or the killer hamsters. But I somewhat thought there would be more movies iwth a real plot. The afterparty was so annoying!!!!! I mean how many technical problems where there? A thousand???
When will the films be online? I'm so looking forward to being able to show them to friends at home.
But what was the one with the people in robes about which was shown at the union? I really didn't get that. And the planes??!!! Ummm.... so you're cool and you can fly... How about a plot though?!

Put it in the general cinema? It was a mini movie of trailers, called "Straight to VIDEO" of course it wouldn't be in the cinema! That's the point!

As for "computer geek humour" I really don't know what to make of that. If it was the DDR on the beach bit, I don't understand how a game available to the entire student body in the union is "geek humour".

Of course, the fact that you were in the team that made the Donald where's your troosers video, means that you can offer a completely unbiased opinion and say that your team deserved to be in the top 12.

Personally I think that there was a good selection in the top 12, ranging from the artistic, to the comic, to the slightly more serious. I am still reserving my own personal judgement until all the films have been made available online and I can watch them.

It is very hard though to be able to compare films which are of complete different genre. You can hardly compare Straight to Video, which I thought was funny, and enjoyable (i'm not just saying that cos I know the people who made it), with The Last Broadcast, which is more serious, or The Bully, which is more sentimental.(Both which I also enjoyed)

The judges have a very hard job to do, they have to remain as unbiased as possible and judge the films for what they are, and not purly on how much they enjoyed it. If not you could end up with 12 winning films which are all comedies because the judge likes to laugh and is not into artistic films.

It is fair enough for people to give their opinion and say "oh this was complete rubbish, team x should have won, not team y". The exact same things are said about the Oscars and other awards. Just because that is what you think doesn't mean that it is
right. People who are posting saying "my film was better, it should have been in the top 12, or top 3", really should stop being sore losers, so you never won, get over it.

I think that a better way to judge it would be to let the judges decide what films fulfil all the requirements of the Campus Movie Fest rules, and put those it to a peoples vote, put the films online for a week or 2 and let the people decide who should win what awards. Seems alot more democratic to me then relying solely on a few judges.

Right my wee rant over, sorry if you don't agree, but thats my opinion.
