the point of these events is so that freshers waste a significant amount of money on crap events... this does 2 things:

1) drives them to drinking as they are disgusted by what they just wasted cash on

2) means that they run out of cash before they die of drinking too much.

its mainly so people know what the union can offer, and for people to enjoy themselves, i just hope that people enjoy whats on

And apparently Javine was a pop rivals reject who has had a number 4 hit, omg. She also has an album which has been received poorly but on the plus side if there are any 14 year old freshers they'l be stoked.

Never heard of Tim Westwood but my friend snorted at that one?

On the plus side I guess the union will still have the main bar at those times though please say that all the tills will be serving? Because oh my god, on those nights the bar will be packed...unless the soundproofing is bad as then it will be empty.....

eh... the "C" stands for communications... it was Ben speirs that organised FW last year (he was DoS)

Really, i'd like to see everyone here organise as much as bonnie has in the 2 months shes been in office, as well as getting FW organised. do you all forget that there are financial restraints put on who bonnie could get? we had some not too bad events last year, and only the monsters of cheese sold out.

As far as I'm aware, although Ben booked FW last year, Nicola roped in Snow Patrol after the gig they played at the Westie in Dundee last April.
And John Peel would be incredible. His Fabriclive CD is something else, but I suspect he'd cost quite a bit. But hey, isn't that what the Music Fund is for anyway?
Also, I'm glad to hear people enjoyed Joy Zipper

Humm this seems very crap. Bonnie if you read this I plead you to get a decent rock band in there.

I mean Javine? I dislike DJ's period so v unlikely to get any points there. I KNOW it takes alot of organisation, I KNOW its difficult to get big names to come here and I KNOW its difficult to get a lineup suitable to various tastes.

We talk about promoting music in this town but thats never going to happen with someone like Javine. We need gigs, we need people to understand that they can go and jump around in venue 1 to a rocking band. If you really want the music fund to kick off then get a rock band on the scene in freshers. Get the music fund name on ads for that night. Let people know right at the start of the academic year that the music fund means business. I really do hope this all works out this year and the music fund doesnt flop on its ass.

this is a rarity, but i agree with everything that slashwannabe has just said,


in the past the union has hosted bands such as dexy's midnight runners, iron maiden, to name but a few. i feel orientation week is catering for the minority and not the majority.

it should have a balanced set of acts,

(i know big brovaz pulled out and thats making it difficult) but surely there is someone we can get that can surpass snow patrol last year)

and i know that the union cannot afford to draw the big time acts,

feel free to put me back in my place

and likewise please tell me to shut the fuck up if it is required.

Personally I'd say spending money on securing a single pop act is a waste of money in the first place, your better off with just a set of cd's and speakers for the variety (pop acts these days all sound the same anyway!). And so I have to agree that money would be better spent on concentrating on cheaper drinks, better deals, and better/more variety of music to play.

Has anyone considered setting up a local bands night in venue 1 during freshers week? I have a feeling this was tried and failed before, but that would definitely promote the importance of new music talent in st.a if you gave them such an opportunity...I vaguely recall Red Stylus playing a few years ago...they werent too bad!
