Graduation June 2006

The Garden Party is an excuse for you to spend lots more money on not very much, but it's part of the whole graduation experience. You pay your £10.50 (or whatever it is this year), go into a marquee (or somewhere else if it's raining/full) on Lower College Lawn, get a free glass of bubbly, a couple of small sandwiches with the crusts cut off, and if you're lucky one or two *miniature* Fisher and Donaldson delights. Not really worth £10.50, but never mind.

The General Council pish is (I'm a little hazy on this) so that you get a free Alumnus magazine every year and get to have a say in the running of the University in a very loose sense.

Loosest possible sense? Where "loosest possible" is code for "most historically accurate"?

And I believe that those students who sit on University Court get away with not paying the General Council fee on graduation.

In theory if not in practice.

It is true regarding the student members of Court. Although I had graduated before I joined the Court, I do know that those who haven't are, as are staff, exempt from paying the membership fee. Whether it is paid on their behalf by the University, I do not know.

Not to jump on the desperation bandwagon but...if anyone isn't planning on using one or both of their tickets for the Tuesday graduation, you'd be making my grandparents very happy people (and, coincidentally, you'd be making me a very relieved and grateful person who'd no longer have to find a way of telling them they can't come). Good karma all round!
