I hear good things about Dogfish Head brewery.

To those listening, James and Oz British booze tour is pretty good if you want an insight into proper UK drink. The first 6 eps are on iplayer.

You can get Sierra Nevada's excellent IPA in supermarkets in the UK and Threshers etc usually stock a few products from the more established micros (eg the Brooklyn brewery - overrated in my opinion). There's a bar in Houston called the Flying Saucer which stocks over 200 beers from around the US and abroad (shamefully the UK-sourced beer is Tetleys) - personal favourites are the output from the Sierra Nevada company from CA, the St Peter's IPA and Shiner Bock, both from TX, the Colorado Rotator and anything from that brewpub beside the Zoetrope building in San Francisco, in which I spent the best part of a month a few years back.
On a sidenote to your sidenote, Australia also dishes out the odd exception to its standard bilge-water lagers - the Little Creatures IPA from Fremantle, WA, is worth a search and the Nelson pub in the Rocks in Sydney also brews its own, rather pricey line in ales (also concentrating on IPAs). I am currently in South Africa and it, by contrast, has toss all to offer in the way of beer other than the grotty Castle brand...
Finally, to echo Al, I also hazily recall the 'glory' days of the pound pint at the Union. Per Stella ad Gutter...

In Boston I do enjoy the Sam Adams brand. Anyone found that over here? It hurts to drink something bearing the name of a bloke who buggered our nation up but not even that gets between me and good beer.
What?

It's illegal to sell alcohol below cost price unless it is out of date and advertised as out of date. Then you can sell it at whatever price you like!

Is that a rule which applies to supermarkets?

I'm assuming so as that's what my parents told me and they own a shop. I just thought it would probably be the same for the bar.

Hmmm.I tried Old Scratch, a type of bottled ale (?) we have at my work from the US and it was one of the most awful things I have ever had the misfortune to taste.
