Am I being very stupid, or is there an absolute dearth of information about the Rector or the Rectorship on either the Association or the University site. I can get a postal address, and a press release about Sir Clement's election, but that's it.

I suspect, like last time, the first challenge will be telling people what the heck a Rector actually is before we bother trying to campaign for any particular candidate.

That's what we've said as well. I doubt the powers that be have any intention of informing the student body.

You will recall, Mr J, the gentleman whom we canvassed in 2002, who said that he wasn't interested in the election for Rector because he "wasn't religious". Le sigh.

So, would some kind of information campaign from the Students' Association be in order? I'd be happy to put together a leaflet that we could distribute, and a few posters, provided everyone was happy that the information was unbiased (which would be easy enough since naturally the publicity wouldn't mention any of the candidates by name).

It would be very much in order. The election is in a month. Of course, in an ideal world, the Students' Association shouldn't have to do a job which the University ought to do itself, and it can only serve further to reinforce the perception of the Rector as a kind of welfare role instead of a central part of University governance, but such is life. Methinks the General Council ought to look into this matter. Now, if I only knew someone on the Business Committee...

There'd be no point of running a fictional character for Rector. Nor is there any point in running a joke candidate.

The Students' Association has been planning a campaign to inform the electorate about what the rector is and does. We're about a week into the plan, and the posters should be out early next week. Keep your eyes peeled!
