i disagree. i think it should be to do with land mass of each nation within the UK as that is how each one is defined. not by its population.

Hmm, by that measure, Russia should be a lot more important in the world than it arguably is these days.

I do find the England-centric nature of "Britain" to be somewhat annoying, though. Saying that, I identify myself as "British", rather than anything else. Perhaps because saying "yes, I'm half-English, quarter-Scottish, quarter-Welsh" is a bit of a mouthful.

i never said it was to do with importance in the world.
i meant within the UK as that was what is being discussed on this thread.

I realise that, but I was meaning if you applied the same logic to the world. Hm, just imagine if that logic applied and Russia joined the EU. ;)

But if there's nobody living there, how do you find things to report on?... today a sheep in the highlands fell and broke its ankle?

The fact that 5/6 of the population of the UK live in England plays a role in its interchangeability, I'm sure.

I thought 5/6 of the population of England lived in St Andrews? ;>

There is stuff going on, although maybe not of such a huge importance. Grampian TV news always seemed to find something to talk about north of Aberdeen/Dundee, yet for some reason, BBC Scotland was always about goings-on in Glasgow and Edinburgh - it would be lucky if anywhere north of Dundee was even mentioned.

Perhaps Independance is the answer.

The scots could get on with running our country unhampered by english television and england could finially get a chance to stand on its own two feet.

yep, the regional news(i think its "north tonight") is usually pretty good in not talking about stuff that happens way down south. and yeah, youre right about the BBC Scotland news, they never mention stuff from up north unless it affects things down south in some way.

it's a pity grampian tv no longer exists and we;re now stuck with crappy central-belt-centric STV.

To answer the question how should we define the english? There's not much there uniquely english to define.

It must take balls of steel to dress up like a pedophile and skip around waving hankies. Morris dancers of the world, you have my respect!
