Time for a NEW RECTOR

This message board is for discussing anything in any way remotely connected with St Andrews, the University or just anything you want. Welcome!

Jack Vettriano would be great. Chris Woodhead would be good.

Personally I would go for someone I think might give the university a shedload of cash or someone who would raise the profile of the university in an extremely positive way.

I think Jack Vettriano would be brilliant and I am surprised he has not be suggested before.

It is easy to nominate someone as rector.

1)Find out if they are willing
2) Go to the Hebdomonars (??) Office and get the forms
3) Sign up 20 students with matric numbers
4) get the person you are nominating to sign another form. In the past if it has been close to the deadline a faxed/emailed version has been acceptable pending a postal version.

You can contact most potential rectors fairly easily. A determined phonecall to the organisation they work for eg paper plc university parliament or through their agents which thanks to google are not enormously difficult to locate - or for instance if they have been on newsnight then a phonecall to the bbc can help find the right number or person to approach to contact them. For a wealthy donor most would love to be approached and appreciate that they have been considered. A letter or email will be treated seriously because the university has a good reputation. I would personally ring first if at all possible.

I personally think the last rector was a very self indulgent choice by the then current students. Hopefully the next one will be someone who can be of benefit to the university in the long term either through wealth, profile or expert advice within the educational sphere.

She canna tak it?

More pertinently, though, it's the Clerk's Office which provide the relevant forms. And the library keeps copies of Who's Who, so it's a doddle to find addresses of worthies.

'bout time that came into play.

As for Mr Wilson's cry of 'derivative', I say why not just go for the genuine articles? After all, we had the monumental triumph (at least compared to the current Lord Rector) which was the rectorship of Sir Clement Freud, who'd previously served at Dundee. He at least put his hand in his pocket for the students...

I am always surprised that the name of Franklin Birkinshaw never comes up at these times. A bit old, but an alumnus with a high profile.

Sir Eric Anderson, unless his Eton commitment is too time-consuming?

I fear if you wanted a genuinely St Andrean MP, they are in diminishing supply.

Sir Eric is out, sadly, as Eton is in the midst of a massive fundraising drive which is occupying much of his Provost-ship.
