destroy

Postby killjoy on Thu May 13, 2004 12:57 pm

despite the many, many, many emails being sent (i think it was what put the network down the other week) i cant put this tour de force online. (If you want to know why send £5 pounds to the JBH sweetie shop for killjoy's debt relief. )
Rumour has it that all movies will go online in no time at all, so then you will all be able to

Offensive

Postby Yankee_Girl on Thu May 13, 2004 1:24 pm

I had to comment on how disgusting and tasteless I found Guantanamo Baywatch. The makers of this filth blatantly don't understand how serious certain matters are.

American policy towards terrorism and terrorists is no laughing matter, and their mockery of CIA brutality was too close to the bone.

They should be ashamed of themselves.

It did look as if it was trying to be satirical, but I did feel a tad uncomfortable watching it. They were unlucky in their timing as i think it was filmed before certain photos had been published by the press. On the other hand, it could just be a very sick comedy.
Maybe if they were to explain the intention of the film, i might get a better idea of how to interpret it.

Things are still being kept hush-hush but rumour has it that Peter Jackson is considering making a remake of Destroy Roy starring Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp in the lead roles. Also rumoured to feature in cameo roles are Samuel L. Jackson, Clement Freud, MC Hammer and the ghost of Jimi Hendrix. As of yet these rumours remain unconfirmed.

Guantanamo

Postby Orang-u-tan on Fri May 14, 2004 8:13 am

Hi all.

As one of the Guantanamo participants, I should just say that:
a) We didn't intend to offend anyone
b) OBVIOUSLY we didn't know there was going to be an outcry over prisoner humiliations the week after we submitted - are we meant to be psychic?
c) It was meant to be ironic anyway
d) A full version (ie not 5 mins) would have explained the identity mess-up in greater detail; further, in editing, the more harrowing bits had to stay in to tell the story while some (ultimately deemed superfluous)comedy bits were left by the wayside

Ultimately, I don't think the film was controversial. If it hits close to the bone, then it is not our fault that torture and humiliation is carried out by WHOMever and WHEREver.
If you don't like the film because of poor acting, poor story, bad camera-work, poor editing, poor soundtrack, or lack of jokes, then be my guest. We can't be held responsible for events out of our control.

OK it won best special effects, but looking it, it surely can't have be done using the limited resources on iMovie... I thought it was one of the rules that the movie had to be made in iMovie??

I mean the matrix style jumping and things, and some of the crazy effects in the halls...

Actually, AFAIK (and I'm in the film, but didn't edit it), the only special effects during the Kung Foo bit involved changing the speed of the film. The rest is all camera tricks.

Straight to Video

Postby Tyler Fincher on Fri May 14, 2004 6:20 pm

I asked beforehand if we could use Premiere, and they said yes. However, I have experience with iMovie and 'technically' we could of done it all with that if we had to (it would just have had more detrimental effects on our mental state). With the exception of the high jump in the kung fu trailer that involved Deus having to work for 20 hours flat with Photoshop, changing it frame by frame. I was initially against it, but another team member wa so for it, just to see if it was possible.

So tell us - how was the "spinning on the fist" bit done?

Doh, forgot the high jump.

Spinning on the fist was done using by tying the guy to the branch of a tree, spinning him around to get tension in the rope, then letting him go while the actress kept her hand underneath him.

He was limping for a day after, but sacrifices for art, or something...

How to make a sure-fire winner

Postby Elvis on Mon May 17, 2004 12:49 am

A little off-topic here, but having seen successful I-movies from the last two years, I think there IS a sure-fire 10 point plan to make a winner:

1. No dialogue.

2. A Moby-ish soundtrack.

3. Must have the beach somewhere in it.

4. Have backwards shots.

5. Have shots sped-up.

6. Put some sort of colour filter on to get 'dreamy' atmosphere.

7. Everyone must look very serious.

8. Must be absolutely meaningless (some people will think it is enigmatic and mysterious)

9. A 'shock' ending is desirable (Oh my God! He was dead all along!)

10. Must have some strange symbolism at work (people wearing baggy clothes that billow in the wind, leaves and crisp packets being caught in updrafts, etc)

1st place 2005 here I come! ;-)

Don't apologise, it was absolute genius. Certainly made quite a few laugh. It should have been shown at the award cermony and run for the comedy award.

No filters in last years.

v. good point. Gonna try it next year (probably fail miserably)

It'll probably be even tougher than this year. You're gonna have to watch your back ;)

It was actually hitting the tree that really got to him - reckons he may have broken something in his shoulder (silly boy).
I don't mind what happens now and then, as long as you'll be my friend at the end.

Destroy Roy was a film cobbled together by a few people in John Burnet in the last 20 hours before the deadline. This shows. It's edited quite poorly and is semi-incoherent, but it does have a few highlights, if I do say so myself, including tremendous wigs, golf-club assassins, an animated sequence, fake blood (read: Tesco Value Ketchup) and the dramatic use of two guys in masks to recreate a ninja army of dozens.

I think if we had had a little more time, and by that, weren't so damn lazy, we could have done something cool (our plan to use voice-overs failed, owing to one of the guys laptop being junky).
