well, good luck with it....you had a pretty good idea posting on here, you've practically got an entire academic family before even getting to uni ;)

Accepted!...

...to Aberdeen. I just received my unconditional offer yesterday and am stunned at the quickness of it! Only 2 weeks! Unfortunately, St Andy's hasn't sent me anything yet, not even an acknowledgement letter.

And an academic family already? Wow...

Believe me, you really, really don't want to go to Aberdeen. One of the most dreary places in existence. And that's just Pittodrie. I believe that there's a whole thread somewhere on the horrors of Aberdeen.

Ok ok, I agree with the fact that Pittodrie sucks, but come on, Aberdeen isn't that bad!! The uni's nice. Mind you, I don't think I'd live there. It's grey...

Are you insane? The university isn't that great (part of the standard advice given by staff to students moving into halls of residence is 'don't lean against the widows because they aren't properly attatched to the building', and some of the departments aren't good at taking into account the fact that you're really ill, have some sort of disability or have had major personal problems when it comes to things like assessment and deadlines) and not worth it unless you have ambitions connected with the Rowett Institute.

As for the town, it's dull, and not only that, it's extremely pretentious and the general population seem to think that the world stops somewhere just south of Stonehaven. The cost of living is relatively high compared to the rest of Scotland and they have some of the most expensive public transport in the UK (believe me, I've used it, but I wouldn't want to drive there anyway because the traffic system is bizarre and complicated).

I could go on like this for a long time, but basically, Aberdeen is like a very big village, it has all the disadvantages of a city, with very few of the advantages. You might be prepared to put up with this if they had a good university, but it's nothing out of the ordinary academically and it says a lot that of all the people from my school who applied there either did it as an insurance choice or because they wanted to be near their families.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Actually I quite like Aberdeen and don't find it dreary at all. After all we are comparing it with St Andrews here, and Aberdeen has a bigger night life than here (not that thats hard).

Yes the weather may be cold but what do you expect in the north of Scotland?

A couple of my mates from my school went to Aberdeen Uni and while I warned them that the city isn't for everyone they fell in love with the place and are now rarely ever seen in Fife.

The house prices may be high compared to the rest of the country but not when you compare them to St Andrews. And the Uni is actually very good for some courses eg archeology.

Plus, you get to learn a whole new language: Aberdonian!

Now am I very doubtful about Aberdeen. I applied to it after receiving some information through the post from the school. It seemed half decent, and Aberdeen was one of the few Uni's in Britain to reply to any of my inquiries for more information, which seemed like a good sign to me.

And I couldn't happen to wonder if there was a little St Andrews favoritism in these negative comments? :)

Also, I don't mind if Aberdeen is a dull town. St Andrews isn't exactly Party Central.

Leticia, personally, i wouldn't go to uni in Aberdeen. I have friends from this uni that live there, and they say the same thing.

Aberdeen is only as big as it is because of the oil workers coming through the town, and therefore it is quite an expensive place to live. It's also quite northerly, and i assume colder than st andrews. Maybe you should wait on St Andrews before being hasty?

Some people like St Andrews some people don't. Some people like Aberdeen some people don't.

Just take your time making your mind up, and I would be wary of basing your choice solely on the opinions of St Andrews students - for obvious reasons :)

PACIENCIA!!!

Postby Aldebaran on Sat Apr 26, 2003 1:15 pm

Last year I received my acceptance on August and the other things I needed from Uni on Sept. 14, three days before I had to get into the plane and fly over here (take into account I come from South America & needed to get my visa, & etc). Faculty, Registry and the rest of the services can be very slow, but just be patient... at the end, at least for me, it was worth all the waiting. =)

Yeah i had the same problems also...
I never got post from the uni delivered to me sooner than 2 weeks after it was posted, whih only added to the delays the uni had in posting stuff in the first place. I only got my contract 2 days before the deadline of submission.
They need more staff/ more organised system..

Even funnier was the fact that I signed the contract accepting accomodation in Chattan two days after I was already living in hall... normally it is mailed to you, then signed and sent back to the accomodation people... but well, some st andrewsian (?) bureaucracy for you...

Aberdeen

Postby Miss Maryland on Sat Apr 26, 2003 11:41 pm

I have a good friend who goes to uni there as well. And people say its cold in St. Andrews! I went and visited Aberdeen in the summer and it's just as cold as it is in Russia!

Aberdeen is a decent uni, but not the best. St A prob has a better reputation. Half my school seem to be going there even though st Andrews is much nearer

Well, I'm not making any final choice until I receive all my decision letters. Aberdeen was my fourth choice, preceded by Middlesex, Glasgow and St Andrews, and followed by Edinburgh and Greenwich.

The list may be out of order, as I've just returned from Prom and am tired...why do they always play the cheesiest music at Prom? Ridiculous.

Aberdeen

I spent the summer working in Aberdeen and I must admit it is REALLY REALLY dull (colourwise) and depressing. I think it's becuase every single building is made out of grey stone. Not one is red or yellow. Couldn't wait to get home or even come back to st andrews after the summer!
