Desert Island Discs

Postby David Bean on Sun Nov 07, 2004 2:59 am

I'm sure this has been done before, but it bears repeating.

In the style of the popular Radio 4 programme 'Desert Island Discs', you are asked to imagine yourself on a desert island, alone and isolated from the rest of the world. You are asked to select the eight single musical recordings - tracks, not records - that you would most like to have with you.

In addition, you are asked to select one full record (on which one of your eight tracks appears), one book and one luxury item. You are allowed the Bible and the complete works of Shakespeare for free, and your luxury item must not have anything to do with survival (you are to be provided with all basic necessities) or attempting to get off the island.

I'll post my own when it isn't 3:00 in the morning.

Here's my own list - for now, at least (ask me again tomorrow and it could be entirely different).

Zadoc the Priest - G. F. Handel
I Was Glad - C. H. Parry
Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits (Live from the Concert for Mandela, featuring Eric Clapton)
The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite - REM
The Rock's 'Hollywood' theme (incl. long intro) - WWE in-house
Mission Impossible 2 theme - Limp Bizkit
Istanbul (Not Constantinople) - They Might Be Giants (Live from the 'Live on Penn' concert, summer 2004)
...and just for fun: the infamous Brian Johnstone/Jonathan Agnew 'Leg Over' incident - Test Match Special, 1991

Album: I'll take 'Automatic for the People' by REM.

Book: Hmm... I think at the moment I'm leaning towards the Cantebury Tales by Chaucer (although that really ought to be a freebie as well).

Luxury item: it'd have to be my notebook, assuming a power source was available.

By the way, non-guitar players are allowed to post too, you know!

A fellow Chaucerian, eh? chaucer is WICKED!

And by the way, my choices for today are totally different. today I would choose:

Songs:
1) Unfinished Sympathy, Massive Attack
2) Divinity, BT
3) Handbags and Gladrags, Rod Stewart
4) Diana Ross, ain't No Mountain high enough
5) Helen Reddy, I am woman
6)Gabrielle, walk on By
7) Lost Witness, 7 colours
8) Puccini, O Mio Babbino Caro

Album: forgot this last time, didn't I? It has to be Annie Lennox, Diva. My Gran bought me that Cd when I was ten and I've NEVER stopped loving it. It was my first ever CD, and is still the best by MILES!

Books:
Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet. all my choices from yesterday should of course be freebies, as I'm an English student.

luxury Item: New circulatory system, regular blood pressure, a faint free existence!

A very quick and rough selection of Tracks:

The Lifting - R.E.M.
Hanging around the day part 2 - The Polyphonic Spree
End of the World News (dose me up)- Tom McRae
Always - U2
Lux Aeterna - Clint Mansell
You drove me to it - Hell is for heroes
Coming in from the cold - The delgados
Bruxellisation - Electric Soft Parade

Album

Tom McRae - Tom McRae
I first heard this about four years ago, and nothing since has changed my conviction that this album is the best that i have ever heard. It's completely musically and lyrically perfect, nothing can be done to it to make it better. everything, right down to the album art, and the order of the tracks is perfect. and its a debut album as well.

Book - Ajax Barcelona Cruyff by Fritz Barend & Henk Van Dorp
or
The Selected Verses of Lewis Carroll

Luxury Item - my "life" folder./ every photo, every yearbook, every newspaper cutting, every concert ticket, every journal entry in there.

Postby Guest on Mon Nov 08, 2004 5:43 pm

Ok, so not got round to answering the questions, but with so many guitarists and so many influences, are any of you guys in bands? I'm a guitarist/singer/songwriter, would be cool to start a band? Sorry, dont want to change the thread, just thought I'd make the most of this opportunity!
Let me know!
