KFB use animal fat

Postby donnamatrix on Tue Nov 30, 2004 2:44 pm

Just to warn anyone who doesn't already know, anything that is fried in the KFB (obviously not pizzas then) are fried in animal fat - this means nothing they sell is suitable for vegetarians.

If you're annoyed by this (and their neglect to inform customers), please ask them to consider changing their fat, or at least to put up a sign warning people who don't fancy having their food soaked in animal fat. I've asked them to put up a sign but nothing, as far as I know, has appeared yet. They're the only chippy in St. A's who use animal fat.

*PLEASE NOTE: this thread is NOT an invitation to discuss vegetarianism (although please feel free too, obviously) - last time someone even mentioned being vegan on The Sinner the abusive and often ignorant thread went on for ages. I'm just trying to warn those who care.*
[s]"Those who claim to care about the well-being of human beings and the preservation of our environment should become vegetarians for that reason alone. They would thereby increase the amount of grain available to feed people elsewhere, reduce pollution, save water and energy, and cease contributing to the clearing of forests."

Perhaps that's why it always smells nasty outside the KFB.

I have no problem with them using animal fat, i do have a problem with there questionable hygeine practices this being the reason i only ever go there sloshed (quite a lot then!) i agree they should have a sign, but animal fat does makes chips taste a hella better though!

surely as long as they aren't promoting their food as "suitable for vegetarians" or similiar then it's up to people to ask whether or not it's animal fat they use. Just like in a restaurant you might ask if there was cucumber in the salad if you don't like cucumber.

people DO have the choise to eat elsewhere, but aren't KFB shooting themselves in the foot by denying the veggies a chance to part with their cash?

It's healthier for you meat eaters out there to eat stuff cooked in veggie oil. And it's almost totally unheard of now (apart from in Harry Ramsdens) to have food fried in animal fat. I have actually worked in a chip shop myself ( don't laugh...I know, the idea of a vegan serving up fish and chips is a bit odd, but there you go, it was good fun and the people were COOL) anyway, yeah, back to the point...they said that it's daft to use anything other than veggie oil cos the ohter stuff STINKS to high heaven anyway.

I think veggie oil is also cheaper than lardy stuff. So all in all, there are NO reasons why it's better for the KFB to use animal fat. They are in a definite minority. and should sort their act out...this is the twenty first century!

To be honest, animal fat tastes better, and the market is not there for vegitarian chips. It's out of most people's ways, so they go for the taste, and that would be damaged by using vegetable oil. In short, no!

they could always do what McDonalds does; fry them in vegetable fat, but impregnate the chips with flavourings derived from animal fats so that they taste like they were fried in tallow like they used to be before the health lobby got on the case. Most chippies use vegetable fat I believe, its cheaper and easier to handle (its a liquid and not a solid)

"Chipped potatoes deep fried in vegetable oil", one would presume.

ask for a large bag of them and you'll get 2 free pints of attitude from the KFB, not just the usual 1

The KFB is the only real chippy in St. Andrews! It's the only place where they'll fry anything, including my personal favourite - pizza supper.

It's also the only Italian one in town, and as anyone remotely knowledgable about chippies will tell you, they're the best.

It is a testament to their frying that they can use animal fat...
