Question concerning halls

Postby fran on Tue Dec 21, 2004 3:49 pm

I just looked at the prices for halls next year (on the Student Portal). First of all where for fuck's sake is Stanley Smith- Angus Hall???!!! And secondly, did I get that right: Sallies, JB and Hamilton cost in 2003/2004 £ 87.71 per week, now cost £ 104.37 and next year will cost £ 129.76???!!! I really don't get their diagram. Please somebody help!

Stanley Smith / Angus house is a postgrad hall. Its' the fife-park lookalike in the lane behind empire kebab shop. So if you're not a postgrad, don't worry about that one.

And as far as I remember, yes, your union agreed to the university having an incremental increase in hall costs over the next few years. I can't recal the numbers, but it was double-figured percentages over the next few years.

That's part of the "phased" increase in rent that "Your" Union fought so hard for.

Thank goodness I'm graduating this year. Returning students are going to get it in the shorts.

Yes, it's a wonderful deal. It's actually more of an increase than was originally proposed, although spread over three years. You'll note that the catered accommodation options include ones that come to more for an academic year than the full student loan. Not that the university really wants anyone who would be collecting that. Those students who had already started last February when the rises were announced get rebates. That's all folks.

Oooh, don't get me started on bloody university accomodation. I'm spending my second year in Uni Hall. Last year my loan came in at about £2300 and hall fees were approx. £2700.

This year just to make things more interesting my loan was completely screwed up and at the beginning of term they told me that my award for this year was £1100, despite the fact that my family's income hasn't changed significantly.

They finally reevaluated my loan and it now comes to about £1800. Even with the rebate, my rent for the year comes in at about £3000.

Not entirely sure about the increases over the next few years but if the predicted rebates are anything to go by (£650-850 in 2006/2007) rents are going to be astronomical.

Anybody know if there's going to be a corresponding increase in private rental fees?

Yes there is, though the rents are exorbitant already. It seems you can hardly get a room for less than £80 per week, and on top of that you'll have to pay bills, buy food etc.

50 quid up indeed, trying to find decent, cheap accomodation in st andrews is damn near impossible, and it's not like the uni offer us anything wonderful for a cheap price. i mean albany park is ok, but those 1mm thick walls which have the amazing capacity to transmit sound 3 times as far as it's meant to travel...it gets wearing after a while quite frankly.
my housemate and i are considering selling the technology used in making the walls to telecommunications companies and making our fortunes...

The way the Association is handling things, it'll probably be £10,000 for a semester in Albany Park by 2020 - but obviously, important issues like the Saint are being tackled head on.

You have to laugh - if you're graduating within the next 12 months.

Albany Im afraid will be gone by then. The University in its wisdom is getting rid of it in 2012. :(

So they can build more halls like DRA-where eventually most students wont be able to afford to stay. Supposedly they plan to sell all the in-town halls like McIntosh and Regs and build more outside of town, as the 'town and gown' relationship is not going well. At this rate, I will be living in a cardboard box outside of Physics next year.... :(

When are they taking the second hall fees installment out? My overdraft's larger than the Colossus of Rhodes and I really don't think I'm going to be able to afford board and lodgings for the second term...

do what my flatmate did in albany; get a full loan and spend it all on playstation. then cut your hair so gay that no-one will employ you. then they will give you hardship.

start selling shite on ebay, claiming its 'very special' shite.
I know someguy makes a living off just buying shite from charity shops and the like, then selling it for about 10x on ebay

I don't see the problem in getting rid of the in town halls and using the money from them to build new halls out of town. As long as the new halls don't all cost a furtune to stay in that is. A 20 minute walk will hardly kill you, will it?

These prices will mean that I'll probably have to leave St Andrews...
And I do see a problem with selling all the in-town halls: aesthetic wise and living in town is just far more convenient. No, a 20 minute walk won't kill MOST of us, but what about disabled students? And about the town-gown relationship: I've consumed far more since moving to town.
