How did you manage that with him being in Estonia? I suppose it would be quite cool though, but at the moment I'm hoping for Anne Robinson or possibly Boy George (if that rumour is true).

I belive the essential word here is asked; it seems to me every celebreity has been "asked". So far there are very few who have "agreed", Anne Robinson, Germaine Greer, and if the rumours are to be belived, Boy George ...

just e-mailed him through radio2 - obviously no reply yet though
anne robinson was quoted as saying that she'd like to be rector to see what people thought of studying with Wills.
Boy George WOULD be sort of cool- but how seriously do you think the University Court would take a cross dresser?
but either would be better than Jonathan Aitken

How seriously do you think the university court is going to take any celebreity? It seems to me that everyone is rushing head over heels to get nice big celebreitys in with little regard to how good a job they will do. I agree with Thackerys comment on our article; we should be concerned with trying to find someone who will be committed to the job who *GASP* might no be someone famous.

well have YOU James? asked a non celebrity to stand as rector?
I think it's unfair to say that some people are just jumping on the celebrity bandwagon. I personally chose to ask Wogan not just because he is famous ( because, lets face it, a well known name fighting a cause on the national level is more likely to succeed than an unknown of the same calibre)
I chose to ask him because he is clever, articulate and diplomatic. Why else would his radio show still be going strong after 30 years?
I just hope he decides to stand.

Personally so long as the person can do a good job I don't mind too much who it is - but obviously this isn't a contest of merit, but rather one of popularity and no doubt any "real" people that try to run will be drowned out with clamouring celebrities.

No, and I didnt meant that as a personal attack on Terry Wogan or your choice of him - sorry. It just seems to me everyone is trying to find someone famous for this.

Problem is, the university has got such a high profile now, that lots of celebrities want to stand for it. And when election day comes, people are going to go for the name they recognise as they will be able to make an assumption as to what that person will be like, given what they have read/seen/heard of that person. It's a pity, but unless people are really well informed about some person who is not a celebrity, they are not going to vote for them.

Anne Robinson does seem rather interested in Wills - the quote mentioned above, and she asked Lynsey about him when she was on the Weakest Link...

If not, let us know when it's going to be shown - I want to be able to point and shout "I know her! I know her!"

And so on.

andrew neil

Postby triple ? on Mon Jan 01, 1990 12:00 pm

I spoke to andrew neil about this, he said that paxman asked him about it, and Neil said do it if you really want to do it

ie if you commit yoiursel;f then you'll have to turn up to all the university court meetings etc

the rector isn't just a figurehead, it's a real role, with real responibilites

which i think have to bear in mind, andrew neil has actualy never missed a court meeting, quite impressive for such a busy man

As a Lord of the realm I'd be more than willing to stand as rector.

I'll be so pissed off if we don't get a celebrity rector. And it will be all YOUR fault for being so bloody annoying about it.

(BTW I feel I should probably expain why I have posted 1003 random pointless messages tonight on various boards. I have an exam tomorrow at 9:30 which I've yet to start studying for. I'm sure you understand...)
