Being an uneducated fool - i must ask "Who is Howard Marks?"

You'd be amazed at what you can find on Google. That's a search engine, such as can be accessed on a computer, not unlike the one you're sitting in front of.

What are the rules?

Postby flossy on Fri Feb 04, 2005 9:38 pm

Are there any rules to say who can or cannot run? I want to campaign for a candidate but she isn't a typical choice for this sort of post and definitely isn't a CelebRector.

They can't be a student or employee here, or 'involved in the governance' of any other Scottish Higher Education Institution (universities plus a few other little ones). There used to also be a recommendation against over 70s, but that one was perhaps unwisely dropped.

Actually, they can't be involved in the governance of this university either, however slightly. I was compelled to resign from the Business Committee of the General Council in order to stand - apparently having an interest in the University is not permitted in candidates.

That's obviously where you went wrong. Who would want a Rector who was likely to show any interest in the University?

Quite right - just think of the consequences of a proficient rector!

He's a black supremacist. She dares to be a feminist. It was amazing how many female students said they weren't feminists, despite their university education, cars, careers, votes and right not to be raped in marriage. 'Feminist' is a word that seems to have lost its meaning somewhere along the way, that meaning being no more than believing in equal rights for women in theory and in practice.

I can understand why you would be bitter but they probably meant that they weren't her kind of feminist since from what I can remember she came across as anti male, rather then committed to the wellfare of the students as a whole.

Tom Hunter - hes scottish, worth £500m and gave £105m to charity last year. Also keen on giving his money away while he is still alive. Elect him so he feels an allegiance/tie with the university and gives us some cash?

Yes, but we all know what the Uni would do with £100m.... Built more flats and charge £100 quid a week! Filthy capitalists!

Edit: How about Menzies Campbell? (yes I'm SNP but I'm trying to be realistic about who'd be popular and useful!)

2nd edit: Ok then, Alex Salmond!!

Menzies Campbell is our external assessor, so he's already involved in the governance of the University - therefore not allowed to be Rector.
