Anyone else get depressing results?

Postby richey on Sat Feb 05, 2005 4:10 pm

I've just got my psych results back, and well, I am on a 2:2 average, not the 2:1 average I had hoped for. I worked so hard last semester, and worked really hard for the exams as well. I'm so depressed and dejected. It sucks.

A 2:2 is not the end of the world. And perhaps if you keep up the good work you'll pull it up to the 2:1 everybody seems to collect at the end of their time here!

I don't understand why i can't turn my 1sts in coursework into a 1st for my module mark. Not happy.

hey Richey- dont worry, I got a 13 for classics last year. I managed to up it this year, that 13 still counts for 1/8th of my total mark, but not all is lost cos i worked hard this year. same for you-

it doesnt have to mean you'll get a 2.2 overall there's still next year.

p.s. Im coming up tonight with withnail and I, if you want to watch ;)

going to kill yourself for that? watch what you say. uni is not just about studying, its about social development as well. and a 15.7 is a really good mark, a high 2.1. devaluing it simply because it does not meet your mark-orientated agenda, only hurts other people for whom that is a respectable mark. like me for one. Im on 15.6 over all, and happy I've got so far

I hope the comment about 15.7 was a joke. It is a good mark, and a lot of people would love to do that well. I do think you should be careful what you say.

Meep! I got an 8.9 (for Number Theory) and that isn't my lowest mark and you are sat there moaning about 15.7 being your lowest....

*slinks off*

ok, my results were what I expected but no doubt everyone else would find them depressing....

The one grade I needed was a pass but very disappointing. Anyone else had the stages of grief (or am I overreacting)?
Denial (rechecked the record card twice), anger (some subjects are easier than others), despair (I'll never get a degree) then acceptance (I can always become an accountant).

hehe, despair and denial were last year when I got two 8s...this year I just don't care anymore

I won't end up as an accountant...I'll end up as a starving artist (and thats starving cos I spent all my wages on internet) addicted to the bleep that the Tesco checkouts make when they scan a barcode...*insane grin*

I got my passes and my lowest was 8.3. i'm pretty darn pleased with that mark as well considering I expected a big fat fail for most of my subjects. So what I don't get my honours and it looks as if I finish this year,a degree is a degree so who's worrying? Hopefully someone will take me with just a general bio degree and if not I can always try again. Yay for the pass marks!!!!

Oh Lord I am the only one here who has done so crap in honours then. How about 5.4 for an eighth of your degree folks? bloody hell - I'm so annoyed it's unreal. What really annoyes me is my other two mods gave me results of 2:1/1st borderline....gah! So now I haven't even got a 2:2 I'm on a 3rd....oh my god....i feel so shit.

And yes I have been through all those stages of despair and grief - never mind I'm sure accountancy is not that bad....*sobs*...or maybe I should just leave now cos don't think I could face my advisors and personal tutors tommorrow.....*runs to pack her bags*

Yes. Yes I also had that.

I think there are self-help books for people like us...

Don't they use a median rather than a mean to calculate the final degree score? I'm sure I heard that somewhere... The idea being that it kind of discounts any mark you get which is abnormally bad. Though by that logic, it also disounts any abnormally good ones too.... grrrrr (I got 1 good mark this time round)

I think that in some way they use both the mean and the median. Damned if I know how, though.

don't they use the credit weighted mean first to calculate your degree class and if it turns out your mean is borderline, they will use the credit weighted median to determine which class of degree you should get?

Anyhow that was my understanding of it.

credit weighted mean: example

module 1: 15 credits, grade 14
module 2: 10 credits, grade 12
module 3: 10 credits, grade 13

(15 x 14)+(10 x 12)+(10 x 13) / 35

ie: sum of multiplying grade by number of credits all divided by total number of credits.

Ach I don't know...maybe I should just concentrate on doing well and see how ti goes!

16.6 is my lowest mark, despite only doing 1 days revision for the exam and only answering about 2/3rds effectively!

Its got to be a conspiracy. A good one, of course, but I'm tempted to just write "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" over and over again in May, and still see if I can get a First :)

My grades have improved since moving into Honours, does that happen for everyone?
