Voting On Election Day

Postby Prophet Tenebrae on Thu May 05, 2005 3:34 pm

Perhaps a somewhat prosaic thread but as they are always saying that young people are politically apathetic, just how many people here have voted (or intend to - still 3.5 hours to go).

And obviously if you feel confident enough to break the sacredness of the secret ballot - do feel free to say who you voted for... although I know most people would probably do that anyway.

And if you didn't vote - why not?

I voted. it was rather anticlimactic, and then i realised how lucky I am that it WAS anticlimactic and there was no one bribing or threatening or holding a gun outside. Not to get overdramatic but it did drive home what a priviledge voting is.

Mine was a postal vote sent in last week, so today's not quite had the same excitement of going to the actual polling station. Needless to say it was a vote for the Tories

I voted... It was quite different from my last time, when there were police everywhere (the primary school it was in backs on to the Police station, and police stations in Northern Ireland tend to get worried about being blown up quite a bit). Still, it wasn't one of the polling stations which had people with baseball bats outside.

This was positively boring in comparison!

I voted last week in a postal ballot. It was a bit anticlimatic as i quite like going into the station to vote.

the 2001 election was set to be on May 3rd for long enough. That was the last Thursday that we would have been too young to vote on. We were quite relieved when Foot and Mouth pushed it back a few weeks.

Who can vote? To vote in parliamentary elections in the UK you must be a British citizen, a citizen of another Commonwealth country or of the Irish Republic, as well as being resident in the UK, aged 18 or over, included in the register of electors for the constituency and not subject to any legal incapacity to vote.

I voted here. I thought it was quite satisfying to vote Lib Dem and help to keep a Tory out.

This is not a criticism or an attack on your choice: but I would be very interested to here a cogent reason for spoiling a ballot (especially for a student who would usually have the choice of at least two seats in which to vote).

I've no respect for people that spoil the vote - it's not "sending a message to the government" it means that you're either mentally retarded, conforming to some tiresome rebel/anarchist stereotype or just a fucking loser.

And that is an attack.

Somehow I didn't have you down as a Tory Bramble!
Just out of interest, does it have to be a cross that you put in the box? Cause I always thought so but the sign in the booth just said 'mark'.

I'd never been to a polling station before - I was old enough at the Scottish elections but I did it by post - it was quite exciting!
