Hi, I’m working over the summer as a Camp Counsellor and was wondering if anyone who has done it before has any advice, useful things to bring, what to expect etc?

Yeah you should take as much money as you can, you probably won't get paid till the end and you will probably be doing some partying at the weekends and such with your fellow counsellors.

Also you will defo want to go travelling at the end with your new buddies, so save some cash for that. This is an excellent time to be going to the states as the dollar is so weak at the moment.

Where are you going? I know a lot about California and New England. Are you going with BUNAC? Give them a call and see what they recommend you take. They are very nice.

Make sure you know what the camp is like and how many days off you get off, working hours, etc before you go. I worked in an all boys camp for 9 weeks last summer, living in the same room as the kids, communal showers, no TV in the evenings and limited opportunity to get off camp when the opportunity arose. I got 9 til 12 off in the evening, 3 days out of four and only got 5 days off in the whole summer!! It was pure hell, loads of other people I know loved camp so don't be put off by my story! Just learn from my mistake, research the camp and don't accept the first offer from a camp that you get.

Take some zip lock bags- ideal for sticking wet clothes in. The camp i was at had loads of kits for the international staff ie sleeping bags, torches etc so check with themto see if they supply anything. I took over mini Scottish flags and badges and things which I used as prizes in games, the kids seemed to love it.
As long as you are prepared to work hard and be cheerful on hardly any sleep you'll have a great time

Righto, what kinda camp is this anyhow? That would certaintly affect what you should bring. Otherwise, just dont forget the basics, such as:

Duct Tape-- The most useful thing since oxygen, trust me you will always be glad you have the "handy man's secret weapon"

Poncho-- They may look silly, but your not going to want to be lugging around big umbrellas around camp (and you'll need the extra hand). Even the cheapo 3 dollar plastic ones are quite handy, and most important very portable.

Knife-- More uses then just knifing people. Preferably a decent multi-function one, but just make sure it has a sharp blade and is sturdy.

Boom Stick-- In case anyone wants to f**k around with you.

Where in America are you going? And what type of camp is it? Some general suggestions are: sunscreen, bug repellant, money (since the exchange rate is so good right now).
