Or, if you want to be really old school: 'Imperator alumnus est'.

No wonder the women complain about men in this town; there's hardly any cunning linguists left.

Ian McDiarmid. Indeed he is. Social Anthropology I believe, but I wouldn't like to be held to it. Sadly, he declined an invitation to become Rector, maybe it was the robes that put him off.

Social Anthropology, Clinical Psychology or Social Science depending on which source you believe.

Well, if I had a Social Anthropology degree, I'd probably not even admit to it, it's almost as bad as Sociology.

You are, as ever, correct.

Those posting to this thread, of course, would do well to remember that he'd have done most, if not all, of his course work across the Tay.

But still: what a reason for a student here to join the dark side.

But i think someone should try and ask him to be rector again cause he would be cool and also there would be a lot of star wars jokes in town for a while

And when, at some point in the future, the University can say 'Rex Anglorum alumnus est' i'm sure they wont brag about that when pitching to the overseas market, because they'd never do a thing like that...

Except he won't be Rex Anglorum, or even Rex Angliae. He'll be King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

I wrote to Ian McDiarmid a few weeks ago to ask if he'd consider running for Rector. No reply as yet, but I guess he'll be busy with all the Star Wars stuff for the forseeable future.

Forgive me if this is an incredibly dense question, but how is the name "McDiarmid" pronounced? I had for many years assumed it was pronounced as spelt, but this was called into question recently.
