Best Action Movie Ever?

Postby Paranoid on Sat Jun 18, 2005 8:16 am

As a follow-up to my Batman Begins thread...what do you think is the best action film ever made?

Now I'm talking about best as in the most well-rounded, thrilling ride of your life (so no Star Wars prequel suggestions please!...and ANYONE who puts forward 'The Last Action Hero' will meet an unplesant demise...)

What really set your heart pumping, wanted you to BE the hero him/herself?

I'm off to think about it before stating my opinion

doesn't quite meet your criteria, but definitely The Rock should be in the mix, and possibly Face/Off

Another vote for The Rock here. Brilliant action film. Commando would have to be up there as well.

Laugh at me all you like but I like Riddick :) Even the animated film.
Here's to another vote for Face/Off

surely the die hard films would all feature... if not just for the wifebeater factor...however i'm sure everyone will have their own opinion to which is the best die hard film.

For the love of God, not Nicholas Cage movies!

Commando, unquestionably, holds the title

I was going to put Commando, no fuss, no pauses for breath, just action, action, action, and the odd cheesy line thrown in.

"I lied."

60's Batman? You referring to the Adam West one? I've actually got it on DVD, yet to watch it all without passing out (although I always tend to try and watch it after a heavy nights drinking!)

Nicholas Cage aint that bad, I'd have to say Con Air is a top 5 movie of mine...not so sure of Face/Off though

John Woo's "The Killer" back in his Hong Kong days before he got shit was great.

In terms of traditional action - Die Hard 2... and Golden Eye.

Terminator 2 has always been a favourite of mine, along with Die Hard: With a Vengeance.

GoldenEye is definately the best ever bond film - not only is it full of action, but there's a relatively complex plotto folllow, too - that's relative to other bond films.
Nicholas Cage movies are ok - they're not my favourite, but I have to say I love 8MM.
Does Gladiator count as an action film in the strictest of senses? If so, it definately features somewhere in my top 10.

From Russia with Love was my favourite Bond film. It didn't rely on gadgets and was one of the very few that made any reference at all to the cold war - which is what the spying game was all about.

I'd also give a vote to The Rock. Everything one needs in a mindless action movie.

Terminator II is one of my all time favourites.

Does The Incredibles count as an action movie? It's one of my favourites too.

And then is heard no more: it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.

Horror
- Interview with a Vampire

Comedy
- Leathal Weapons 2-4

The Rock kicks some serious ass, and was my proclaimed "best movie ever!" for at least 2 years through high school. Losing the title to Holy Grail, which was then usurped by The Big Lebowski.

The Rock, Terminator 1+2, Ronin, True Lies, Die Hard 1, Cliffhanger, The Abyss and Commando all make my immediate shortlist for contenders to the title.

Predator, Aliens, Die Hard 3, Total Recall and Walking Tall all earn honourable mentions.

Masters Of The Universe, Street Fighter, Batman Forever, Demolition Man, Last Action Hero, Timecop and Welcome To The Jungle earn
"youd say their bad, but youd probably quite happily sit through one if you sat down with a beer and it happened to be on" status

There is another vote for FACE OFF, American History X. I would add here Training Day as well.

I would suggest Matrix I as best science fiction/advanture.

Best drama for me will always be The Godfather Trilogy.

For Survival Horror/Action:

Resident Evil or the new Dawn of the Dead...

Land of the Dead looks promising...

And I'm somewhat surprised that so few have said...

THE MATRIX.

It gave us spinning around in slow motion.
