Random facts

Postby David Bean on Fri Jul 15, 2005 5:57 pm

Here's some fun for all the family: post a random fact that might be interesting to your fellow Sinners.

The rules are simple: it has to be true (so no false urban myths), it has to be something you know, not something you just looked up, it has to be genuinely interesting (so 'the door to DRA Nisbet 3 doesn't work properly' or 'I'm an orangutan' don't make the cut, I'm afraid), and it has to be purely facual, so no barely-disguised opinions. Offshoot discussions of previously-posted facts are to be encouraged.

I'll start: the best-selling American author of the 20th Century was Erle Stanley Gardner, who among other things was the creator of Perry Mason.

Boar/Pig ejaculate is around 500ml in volume on average.... compared to 10ml for a human male.

Slime molds - single celled organisms, that can join together and create one slug-like organism and move away in synchrony in times of environmental stress.

You swallow between 0 - 9,000 spiders in your life during your sleep, depending on which rumour you believe.

According to Illinois state law, it is illegal to speak English. The officially recognized language is "American."

According to L. Frank Baum, the name Oz was thought up when he looked at his filing cabinet and noticed one drawer marked A-G, a second tagged H-N, and a third labeled O-Z.

According to legend, when Burmese women are making beer, they need to avoid having sex or the beer will be bitter.

According to National Geographic, Mt. Everest grows about 4 millimeters a year: the two tectonic plates of Asia and India, which collided millions of years ago to form the Himalayas, continue to press against each other, causing the Himalyan peaks to grow slightly each year

According to the 1900 U.S. Census, there were: 596,000 carpenters, 280,000 laundresses, 220,000 blacksmiths, 134,000 tailors, 102,000 shoemakers, 42,000 porters, 37,000 stonecutters, 25,000 millers, 8,000 bootblacks, and 7,000 furriers

According to the film's animators, you'll see 6,469,952 black spots every time you watch 101 Dalmatians.

According to the Kinsey Institute, the biggest erect penis on record measures 13 inches. The smallest tops off at 1 3/4 inches.

Actually, one is in reverse alphabetical order, and forty is in alphabetical order.

And I'm 99% sure that that IOU is fake etymology/a backronym

Thomas Jefferson and John Adams both died on july 4th, 1826.

And John Adams' last words were "Thomas Jefferson still survives!", when in fact Jefferson had died just a few hours earlier.

I'm fairly sure that's bunk, and I'll be skeptical until someone can give me a source. It doesn't stand up to the test of common sense:

- I'm fairly sure states don't have the right to recognise official languages - that's a federal matter
- The language 'American' doesn't exist, and it's hardly likely any state senator would vote to impose a non-existent language, and
- Even if the state had declared 'American' to be its official language, that wouldn't make speaking English there illegal any more than it would prohibit speaking French, German or Chinese.

If you were to spend $26m dollars every day since the birth of christ you still wouldn't have spent as much money as the US has on "Defence" since 1900. $19.5 Trillion.
