A friend of mine got the email saying she wouldn't be allowed to do IR, but appealed and so she's in too.

IR Honours

Postby Guest on Sat Jul 23, 2005 2:05 pm

I am still awaiting a reply to my appeal from the IR department for honours. I'm out of the country so I don't know if they will tell me via email... I got 11.6 first semester but 10.4 this time round (average 11 though). How were your marks this year if you don't mind me asking? Keeping my fingers crossed!
Well done by the way.

For goodness sake!

Why are they letting people in to IR when it is already so oversubscribed??? If you didnt manage to get in, because you didnt do any reading or didnt go to enough lectures then you dont deserve to get in to honours.

And if you did do the work but are just too stupid to get the grades then you shouldnt get in to the programme either.

I really object when some of us put the effort in and they then let anyone in, meaning we who love our subject have to fight over books in the library that much harder and have less chance of getting our first choice modules.

Unless you have a damn good excuse to have got poor grades (and some do, illness, bereavement etc) then you should not be let in to honours.

I'd be careful if I were you, angry ir student.

I said something similar recently and got a right bollocking in reply from some people.

I utterly agree though
So someone asked me "What is it you do?". I thought about it for a minute. Then I thought about it a little more. All the while I probably looked like I was staring in to space, struggling for an answer. And I was. There was only one response I could really give.

My flat mate also gave me a bollocking for critisising those who got in to IR honours on appeal, although I maintain that if you don't have a good explanation for not getting the grades you probably shouldn't be doing the course.
I am amazed they are letting people into IR after Ian Taylor was so fierce about module choices and too many people on the course. As a matter of interest can anyone tell us on what grounds they let people in to honours without the requisite grades?

Well, most of them would be confined to the general degree, which is one year less of funding. Which means it might be that bit more difficult to keep funding Lang's Sexual Harrasment suits...

No no no. Not off subject. The question was, why would they let them into honours on appeal.

If you don't know about the history of our sleazy Principal, there's something wrong... Just check google... Or ask your nearest Magistrand/Postgrad/Alumnus mate.

On a different note, has anyone been rejected even after appeal?

I'm thinking of not bothering with my resit, and then appealing anyway, even though I'll be thirty credits short. Not for IR though.

He had to be like that to emphasise the fact that there are too many students for each module and some would not get their first choices. He's not involved in the appleals. I will however be well pissed off if these if I have to do some module that's my 3rd choice because some joke got in on appeal and filled the module up.

Some people do have good reasons for appeal you know. Not everyone has had the privelage of having a care free year. Does no one realise this? Bunch of self obsessed pricks half of you lot.

That's an interesting question.

But yes, Steveo is right - some people have good reasons for appeals.

Of course, that has to be tempered by the fact that in my years at St. Andrews I did know several people - all female, as it happens - that basically spun a story and turned on the tears to cover for their

So, I suppose like Gareth in the Office I think we need to pretend there is a fire in the benefits office to see if people are for real.

If the potential is there why not?

Postby Guest on Fri Jul 29, 2005 10:36 pm

Of course people should be given the opportunity to appeal, even if they don't have an excuse as major as illness or bereavment. And I see no problem letting such people through if they can convinvce the IR School. I did.

You need to remember that the School has more experience than any of us on who they feel is capable. Obiviously if the people they let in through appeals in the past struggle they would be much more restrictive to students now. History must have shown that such students can turn things around and get good degrees.

I strongly believe, if the potential is there, and the student has already got through 2 years, with ever increasing debt, OF COURSE they should be let in.

But like others have said, there are those who really just want to abuse the system and actually get away with it. One of my friends had no problem other than bone idleness and got in. Really irked me, that did.
