What rubbish, radiohead don't have long enough songs or beards to be a prog band.

Not pink floyd?

I think prog rock bands can most easily be recognised by an unsafe amount of pretension, silly lyrics about fantasy things like dragons, long beards, an urge to drag out songs way beyond their natural length, the amount of critical esteem they are held in (the more critically esteemed the less prog they are) and high instrumental ability. Prog bands also seem to think that mixing classical music structures with rock is a good idea. Most other people realise that this is stupid and not worth attempting. I think Yes are generally accepted as being a pretty archetypal prog band. Oh and prog fans are united on one thing: pink floyd are not a prog rock band. Which, on balance, is probably why they are actually good.

it is at best an ambiguous term, even wikipedias entry is just waffle, but if id been a bit less hasty about posting it, id have had vangelis and jean-michel jarre in there, and also focus. but would have left out radiohead.

I always thought it was defined by whether or not any song the band did stayed in the same genre all the way through (ie love song to death metal - no really).

But then, I'm an idiot.

Whatever Prog is (and Pink Floyd have always been classed as Prog if Washinton was implying they're not), Mogwai are not it. Mogwai are the prime movers and shakers of British Post Rock, muchly different from Prog. Radiohead defy categorisation really but I'd put them between Rock and a hard place. Ahahaha. No, between rock and jazz.

Now, if you don't mind, I'll dissapear for another year. See you in the future, kiddiwinks.

Pink Floyd haven't *always* been classed as a prog band, in their early years they were at the forefront of the psychadelic rock movement and by the time of dark side of the moon they were just a rock band with long songs and jazz and classical influences. Compare them to Yes and you see the difference.

Where the hell is Focus?
And how could Duggeh miss out the original prog rock band that is the Sensational Alex Harvey Band!!

Most 'mainstream' prog rock is utter shite.

It started with the Beatles and ended somewhere in the 70's.
