Fishing

Postby DrAlex on Sun Aug 21, 2005 3:00 pm

Does anyone in St Andrews fish? I passed that fishing shop on South Street every day on my way to bio and thought to myself, I should have brought my rod. Now that I am beginning to think about going back to the North, I'm wondering if anyone knows if it's just fly and deep-sea up there, or if there's some decent angling to be had.

Dr! You should join the Fly-fishing Society - full conact details from the societies office:

socs@st.and.ac.uk

It started up mid. last semester and goes on fishing trip in and around fife and Scotland. I would have joined, but..

yes, i love fishing, fishing basically pays for a lot of my booze. The best places to fish are probably partypoker or betfred pokerroom.

I don't think there's much to be had around St. Andrews. The bay has been pretty much fished out-- there used to be hundreds of boats fishing out of the harbour, and now there are about ten. May I suggest rabbit hunting instead?
Intelligence is good. I'm not very intelligent myself, but I think it's a nice idea.

There used to be - not that long ago - fish in the Kinness Burn. Perhaps there still are some. You could try to catch them. I wouldn't advise it though. Any fish that can survive in the burn is obviously some sort of superfish.

fly fishing club

Postby jsap on Tue Aug 23, 2005 9:50 am

Join the fly fishing club, they will have a stand at freshers fair! beginners welcome and will be able to borrow fishing tackle if required. At the end of last semester we all went to the isle of lewis (fishing) and had a fantastic time. Remember that scotland has some of the best trout and salmon fishing in the world.

You do not 'hunt' rabbits in the UK you shoot them. To hunt in Britain it needs to be done on horseback and ivolves the use of hounds. Only americans hunt with guns and they're just wrong.

And before you say 'you hunt deer with guns'.........you dont. You go deer stalking not hunting.

Flarewearer, where did you go stalking, and did you have much success?

I dont go stalking very often but shoot rabbits regularly for pest control, for which i use a shotgun rather than a rifle.

Do you do any other shooting?

"To hunt in Britain it needs to be done on horseback"

Apart from those areas - like the Lake District - where hunting is (or rather, was) done on foot, you mean?

Hunting very is very rarely done on foot. I have never come across hunting carried out on foot, for the simple reason that most things that require hunting are too quick to follow on foot.

Here is a quote from the BASC website:

"So in Britain if you ask about stag hunting be prepared to be given a horse, not a rifle!"

And

"In Britain 'hunting' usually means hunting with packs of hounds"

What do they, or did they, hunt on foot? Im intrigued!!

I don't shoot myself, but I was working with the RSPB for a couple of months in Aviemore Forest, and joined their stalkers. Went out one night and got a roebuck and a 15 stone red stag ("7 pointer" i think, but I could be wrong.) It was a most enjoyable experience, I was also going to do grouse beating this month, but the estqate got that mite and decided not to shoot as grouse levels were too low... maybe next year.

Am hopeless at fishing, but since we seemed to have moved on to shooting I have a question. Is there somewhere that I could learn? I've been interested for years, but never succeeded in learning and I'd quite like to.

I'm not sure of any places near St. Andrews (there will be some though), but the best way to get into shooting is start with clays. Book a couple of lessons and see how you get on. If you enjoy it and think you want to start doing it regularly i would then think about getting your shotgun certificate and getting your own gun.

The initial expense is high but in the long run will be much cheaper.

I dont shoot clays very often but the place i go to charges £20 per hundred clays. Cartirdges are about £100 per thousand or 10p each depending on the quality and type.

Hope that helps. Any other question just ask. As you can tell im very passionate about this sport and its good to get more young people involved to secure its future!
