Bands we'd like to see come to St Andrews

Postby Lodestone on Wed Feb 22, 2006 1:28 pm

I notice there're three bands playing at the Union soon, which can only be a good thing. Good to have live music. Does anyone know, though, how such events come about?

Meanwhile, what groups would you like to see play here? I'm thinking mainly for small unknown groups you've seen play around Scotland and you think would make for a good Union gig.

I caught the Mosa Funk Club at Bannermans in Edinburgh last time they played, and was pretty damn impressed. They're just a solid funk ensemble with a good knack for being friendly with the crowd, interacting and getting people going. Plus, the lead singer, usually kitted out in zebra print, oozes sex all over the stage.

The Disciples of Panic Earth are a group I've seen around Edinburgh quite a bit, and who're getting a lot of grass roots support and (so I hear) words from Parlophone. If I were to tip any Scottish group to become big, it would be this lot—they play a brand of weegie hip-hop, that in a friendly, down-to-earth way just knocks your socks off.

Call me optimistic, but I think it would be great to get Edinburgh's veteran ska machine up here--and I think they'd be up for it, too. I reckon St Andrews students can skank with the best of them, and are just waiting for someone like Bombskare to come and shake them up a bit.

The Director of Ents and Services is responible for booking bands to play in the Union, we also had a live group playing last night called Nylon.

It's múm (no capitalisation as Dunqn should know) and they are an experimental Icelandic group with electronic effects and beats combined with traditional instruments and oddly sung vocals. They are also rather ace.

The Handsome Family. Touring in May in fact.
Not that most of you had heard of or will like them.

I have heard of them, and I like them. I wouldn't go and see them though. Not in St Andrews. It would be far too difficult to get home after the gig.
