The most dangerous tradition ever?

Of course - the Rectorial Procession.

Did anyone else enjoy hot wax being thrown over their hands and clothes, bits of flaming rope assaulting their trouser legs and a howling wind threatening to blow gown and student off the pier this evening?

I certainly did. Let's do it again next week.

Yes, it was great!

I didn't get to hear the rector's address at the end of the pier though. Did Simon walk back along the top?

Haha, I did think I was going to die going across the top of the pier. Those gowns act as pretty good sails! But I had a great time, it looked so nice.

I did the procession in my first year for Freud and my gown still bears the marks where burning torch material was blown onto it. I thought it was an awesome night though. To be fair you should think before you go, flaming torch, wind, dark, pier etc. Otherwise just stay at home and cover yourself in cotton wool.

It was great! They should have flaming torches at events more often. Simon Pepper walked back along the low part of the pier - he must've thought the pier was too windy...

I'm sad I won't get a chance to go to another one

The Castle Ceilidh also traditionally offers a torchlit procession for those of you wanting to brave the elements again.

[hr]

...but then again, that is only my opinion.

I was in no way criticising, nor favouring the cotton wool option!

I wear my singe-marks with pride.

Us debaters do a lot of pier walks in gowns, and none of us are dead yet.

What do you people want for walking along the pier? A medal? Try cycling along it on a tandem blind drunk in the middle of a storm with no lights...

to think you get to do it again in 3 years. When I did it in first year (was too lazy to do it today) I thought I was going to fall off the wall. One person actually crawled along it cos they were so scared. The singe marks should be worn with pride. Now wear your gown as much as possible and enjoy all your time hear. It's gone a lot quicker than you imagine.

Yes indeed, if you didn't get a chance to join the torchlit procession tonight, Celtic Society supervise the torchlit procession directly after the Castle Ceilidh on May 7th!

Pretty please, Mr Admin, can you stick some of the pictures in a gallery?

I don't know if you are planning to release them, but it would make a sight of most awesomeness. I need a new wallpaper for my computator.

Admin isn't responsible for that - it's got nothing to do with The Sinner...

I'll be putting photos on the web shortly though.

Let's face it though Steve, the force of wind required to blow you off the pier would also likely destroy most of St Andrews.

Thank you all for coming!

What a turnout! We were expecting only half of that.

Thank you to the Juggling Society for entertaining people at the foot of the pier. It looked magical.

And good job to those of us who were there at the very end, with the last torch burning out (mine), the wind picking up even more, the waves splashing harder-- and we still did a proper pier walk!

I thought it was good fun! Though at one point I gave my torch to some random guy who didn't have one as I didn't want to get burned by it (already had wax all over my hands). :D I shall wear the wax stains on my jacket and handbag proudly, at least until I iron them out or pick it off.

To be honest, whichever union hack releases them, be it Oli or Oli the admin, I don't care, I'd just love to see some pictures.
