you can only vote for your faculty senate rep, which is why the votes cast for each senate rep is so low incomparison to the other positions.

So, can we assume that only 35 (or around that number) postgrads actually voted in the election?

Such is often the case; 35 is a particularly low turnout for PGs. The average I've come to witness over the years is usually between 50 and 80.

Cheers:-)

It's no wonder that the postgraduates don't bother voting.

So according to the 2005/2006 figures there were 1,028 postgraduate students in St Andrews.

For the SRC postgraduate positions( SRC Member for Postgraduate Research and SRC Postgraduate Officer) 1533 and 1529 people voted. If we take away the assumed number of postgraduates that we think voted, we come to a figure of how many undergraduates voted.

This figure is still greater than the number of post grads who could have possibly voted.

So fair enough...the posts was uncontested (although to be pedantic all of the postgraduates who voted for the SRC positions could have voted for RON) and I'm sure that we have two extremely capable representatives. But if the posts had have been contested, it would have been somewhat annoying as a postgrad to have src posts, which are presumably in existence for the benefit of post grads, voted in by undergrads.

This argument of course will apply to a number of SRC positions, which are voted on by voters who aren't represented by the postion.

I admit my understanding of what the SRC's function is is non existent, but it would seem very unfair if, for example, MP's for an individual constituency were voted in by the whole of the UK, rather than the people in the constituency.

St Andrews hasn't had "nations" for the purposes of elections for hundreds of years; however, as a fan of the traditional, I'd quite enjoy seeing them be reinstated.

Of course, what very often happens - and I don't know if it did this time - is polling clerks will say "what faculty are you in?" and not mention that postgrads are treated as a separate constituency for these elections.

No they swipe your matric card and find out from there. And have done so for last 3 years if I remember correctly

Admittedly an American comic, based on Stanford, but I find it generally holds true about postgrad students everywhere. Particularly when it comes to elections:

One of the candidates is appealing against a decision that the EOC made against them. The results are being held until the results of the appeal as itg will affect the result.

You would think, they did but no! I am pretty sure we voted for the undergraduate senate reps ... we did not even realise that there is a PG rep too... Which means the low number could be due to not handing out the right forms...

When I went to vote, I was handed a Science / Medicine Senate Representative form, even thought I am an Arts Student.

I hate to break it to Bella, but when Will MacFarlane did the same thing-- they had to run that position all over again.
Ask Bryn about it. It sucked for him
