Who is the new association president?

Postby Rufus on Wed Mar 22, 2006 6:04 pm

Has a decision been reached yet?

(Sorry. I realise I'm being rather impatient).

Pending any appeals that may be lodged, of course.

Do you mean to say that defeat hasn't been graciously conceded?

You're fucking kidding me???!!!!! But he knows fuck all about union politics?!!!

Students who don't get involved or know the system shouldn't vote.

I hope there are appeals.

I'm sure all the union codswallop can't be too hard to learn, and (in order to make that sound less smarmy- i don't mean it to be) he seems to have a good team on side that will adequately show him the ropes, non?

If he had cared about the union in the first place he would have got involved, but he didn't until the last minute. And you would be suprised how much there is to learn about the association.

Someone who knows what they are doing? Yes, I believe so. Someone who has cared about the Association since their first year? Yes. Not someone who was hall rep and thought they would go for president for the hell of it.

I think caring about the students is more important than caring about the precious union.

(And yes, yes, yes, to care about the students one must care about the union. However, i don't think one needs several years of insular hackery to allow them to be Association President).

But you say that like it's a bad thing. Anyway, if people wanted to vote in the Albany park cats, then why on earth shouldnt they? It's a free vote, are you suggesting that only someone with the neccessary hours of union hackage is the only one qualified to do the job? Why don't you just abolish elections altogether and just nominate the appropriate hack for the job (as seems to have happened by default for certain jobs...)

Anyone of reasonable intelligence and with a general interest in matters affecting students can make a fine President. The minutiae can be learned over the summer, working with the current sabbaticals and the elects. As for the ins and outs of the Association's way of doing things, a change is often a very good thing.

(I say this, incidentally, as an outsider who got elected Treasurer as a postgrad and had to learn the Association's ropes very quickly - and as someone who shortly thereafter was made Rector's Assessor and put on Court and had to learn the ways of Court very quickly - it can be done with ease. None of it's rocket science.)

It is a bad thing.

And I think that all the candidates care about the students here. Only difference is, some other candidates know how the union works.

Well that's a democratic vote for you, isn't it? Its not enough to know how the nitty gritty of union beauraucracy works, you have to get more votes than the other guy, simple as.

Ok, this is getting very old very quickly. I am sorry that nobody ran against me. I am sorry that I didn't have to spend the full £55 of my budget to run a full campaign in order to secure the position. I am sorry if you all think that I have come into the position unopposed, or, as some like to say, by default. However, none of that was my fault, and NEVER was I appointed or choosen by another Union Hack to take this position. I received the support of a large number of people when I told them I had the intention to run, however, I never told people not to run against me, neither did Laura nor Graeme. We got these positions fairly and squarely, and I'm sorry if we didn't give people an exciting race, however, I can promise you we will give you quality service next year. Now the 'team' is complete, I look forward to taking office and getting on with the job you have given me to do, putting these so-called 'undemocratic' elections behind me. And, as I've said elsewhere, if I'm not doing my job to YOUR satisfaction, then please come tell ME and I will do everything I can to change.

While for DOSDA and DOES this will help, the positions of Pres and DOR dont need the same sort of knowledge of the union, they just need the motivation to help people and do the job in hand. I dont see how knowing how the union works will help the union President to a great extent!

So what were the actual results? - Who got 2nd etc, would be interesting to know. And what's this thing with the appeal? - who's appealing? Why did it take this long to get announced?
