Permission to proceed

Postby pala on Mon Dec 02, 2002 6:42 pm

I'm an ancient history and economics first year student and just found out my ancient history permission to procced has been withrawn because i missed a few seminars. I was wondering how serious it is and if there is a way of getting it back even though I dont have a justified reason to miss them

Chances are you're screwed.
Go see the course coordinator and see if there any options but most likely it's gone.

Make an appointment with dave roberts phone 2133 to do so. he'll let you know exactly what to do. you'll get a wee note from him anyway, so preempt it by phoning in the morning

Would it make things better if I get a note from a doctor or something?

It means you've probably lost your credits for that course.
I believe from the day you got the note you have a week to appeal against losing the ptp. But if you don't have a valid reason then there's not much point in trying.

Edited to add:
Yeah talk to Dave Roberts - he knows his stuff

Some people try saying they're depressed (often it works) - Although note I'm not recommending it, therefore if you fail you can't sue.

I've heard they dont really kick you out of a course during the first semester when you are a first year student... they just do the whole permission to proceed thing so that you wont miss seminars. Is it true?

You're worrying about this in first year?
Jeez
Make up the credits next semester/next academic year.

But no - it's not just to scare you. They will remove ptp if you don't do the work.

oh ok I didnt know you could do that... I'm not familiar with the whole system yet, then even if they do take it away I can still make up for it next semester, right?

Basically, it means that you have - as far as ancedotal evidence I've heard goes - about a 50/50 chance of losing your credits for the module with no chance to do the exam or take a resit.

I say 50/50 because depending upon circumstance and the school head it can vary greatly. I know of examples of people with pretty much water tight medical reasons for not having attended the requisite number of tutorials etc. and them losing their DP and equally people getting it returned after adequate explanation.

As Greebo points even if you don't get it back, it's not a big deal, you can make up the credits at another point.

By an extra module you mean that I will have to go to extra lectures and tutorials next semester but i will still be able to continue with the ancient history course?

Yup - Doesn't have to be anything to do with ancient history either.
You'd do the courses you intended plus 1 extra

The only

problem would be if the course that you lost your DP for is a prerequisite for your later years. And as it was an Ancient History module, and you're doing Ancient History and Economics, you may well be up the creek.
If that is the case, you'll have to change to a nice sensible course like straight econ then:) (By the way, this is not a good idea if you are not completely happy with A-Level kind of maths.)

even if it is a preresequite it is still possible to retake the module next year. just might turn into a five year course.

You should definitely go and speak to Dave Roberts and see what he can do but he can only help you if you give him a good enough reason for having lost your ptp, ie stress, depression, family problems etc. Speak to him before you speak to anyone else. If your excuse is good enough you might get your ptp back.

*might* as I said, I've known people with watertight excuses to not have their DP reinstated. I don't know if it's still true for the PTP but I think that the final say usually goes to the school head, at least initially.

What if i get a certificate from a doctor saying that I was sick... I mean those are not that hard to get. Will that be good enough?

Might not be. If you've been off ill you are meant to fill in a certificate of absence within 3 days of returning to your studies.

So you may very well be screwed.
