Most powerful photograph taken

Postby Nymphomanic on Sun Apr 09, 2006 9:16 am

I was looking at the bbc website the other day and came across a really awful photograph of a man clinging to a small coffin, face contorted in pain. Really opened up the Iraq situation better than other news reports. This got me thinking about the power of photography. Like loads of photos have changed things such as the little girl in running from flames in Vietnam in 1960 (have I got the right year?).

What other photos do people think are important in history, and do people agree that they are more direct than anything words can say.

I can't find it right now, but there's a cracking picture from Bloody Sunday, of a priest leading some injured people out of the conflict zone, armed with only a white handkerchief.

Like that, but without the lamppost in the way.

That one of Tiananmen (?) Square with the lone protester standing in front of a tank, don't know why but that photo always provoked awe in me.

I saw one that was used as part of an advert for Herald on Sunday.

It features an army official yelling at another person, inches away from his/her face.

It's a shame there isn't a Google images search, where you put in a vague description of the image you're thinking of...

I agree with Dr Alex - the falling man photo and the execution photo are two I would have chosen along with the one posted above taken moments after the 2nd World Trade Centre tower was hit. All of the ones on the thread are great choices though.

I have a book of photos The Photo Book- it's crammed full of striking, moving and important photographs, with an explanation or description of the circumstances for each one. The one that gets me most is a 1940s image of a woman who has just jumped out of a window to commit suicide. The people below are completely unaware of what's going on above their heads.

I don't really buy into all that flag waving rubbish the americans seem obsessed with, but even i was struke by this image. it really shows a determination to continue on despite suffering the greatest attack on american soil since pearl harbour. their patriotism in this case is extremely admirable.

I remember reading, though I don't know how true it is, that this photograph was staged to look like the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima as that is such a well known photo. Interesting if it's true.

Some that struck me most were pictures of child soldiers,

and the Rwandan genocide when all the bones were carefully collected and presented like some huge, grusome stamp collection:
