The Bop

After working for a year or so in the university ents crew it would be nice tyo see what people actually think of the bop and other events that go on in the union.

so love it or loathe it and why?

I don't much care for the bop, and I can sum up why in two words.

Grease soundtrack.

Venue 1 is the only veritable "club" in st andrews... why not make it a club rather than a cheese venue?

because talking to people even those who like cheese, they would much prefer proper dance tunes with proper DJ's. And i would bet there are enough bedroom DJ's in st andrews willing and able to produce a weekly set of whatever style takes the fancy of the student population.
And that would also promote the student DJ scene as well.

Not trying to discredit the work you guys do - i appreciate that it is hard work, its just that the music in there is poor.

Maybe rotate friday nights - one friday = RnB dj... the next = house

i myself am a drum and bass dj, but by no means do i think there is enough of a support for my type of music to fill venue 1. I do believe however that using venue 1 as a proper club would be better. Bring a sort of Fat Sam's to the union - the fact that we travel to dundee on a weekday for that kind of a night is a very tell-tail sign...

anyone else feel this way?

I love the bop just the way it is!

I think its really good to have a mixture of different types of music. It means I get to dance to lots of different stuff, and if songs come on that I don't like, I use that as an opportunity to get a drink/go to the main bar to see if there's anyone I know/ go to the loo to check my makeup or whatever.

If you had nights where you just played a certain kind of music, you would be leaving out all the people that don't like that sort of music.

If you have nights where you play a bit of everything, I'm sure those people can deal with the short bit of time when they don't like the music.

To elaborate on my previous statements, yes, I agree with you. I would never act to belittle the ents crew, I have a lot of respect for what you do, and know that I could never do some of the things you know how to do. The bop is just static in my mind; every night the same, which is why I never go. It seems like there's a bank of maybe 500 songs, and 300 get played in a night, so generally you're listening to the same tunes. Opening up some sort of cycle could only provide more songs and sounds for the event, which surely could only be good thing.

Incidentally, next week's bop is the Charties Campaign Beach Bop, and probably 3 hours of the tunes are to be contributed by yours truly. Expect some glorious hip-hop, RnB and house that you can, you know, actually dance to.

I submit that by leaving the bop the way it is, you leave out scores of people like me who don't like that sort of music.

To throw in my two cents...

I'm a fan of the Bop, but I don't want to go every week, and I can fully appreciate that there are plenty of people (like DrAlex) who just don't like it. Maybe there's a way to have a rotation system for Friday nights, like Inshaala suggested, so that the Bop still happens, but there's a bit more variety too?

a concession would be an actual structure to the night... i have been in the bop where an RnB tune was followed by something like the Proclaimers, and then 5ive comes on...

Maybe section the music a bit better because personally there is nothing worse than being on a dancefloor and an RnB song you are dancing to being interrupted by the proclaimers only to play RnB again later on in the night...

It's been tried on and off for the past 5 or 6 years, and each times falls flat on it's arse. It seems there's only a market for cheese in st andrews :<

BOP!!!!!

I have been bopping for 3and a bit years now, and i have to say that its great! Its the bop, not a club so we expect cheesy tunes that make u grin and dance like a prat! The music might be repetitive, but usually ure drunk and the tunes are of such an awesome calibre that u dance regardless. Its true that if theres a tune u don't like, go to the Bar and do some shots!

I like the requests system they have in the bop now, theres always a chance that u get to hear the classics with some feeder and nirvana thrown in. I have to say that i'm not an RnB fan in the bop, i usually go to the bar when it plays and notice that a fair number of people do the same. RnBs been tried in the Bop and it hasn't done as well as expected by some. Save it for Broons/Dundee.Gin house etc. You go to the Bop for cheese! The Bops usally quite busy too so its safe to assume that its popular enough to still draw enough people.

As for the Beach Bop, u do have to have some beach boys, tunes u associate with the summer etc not just house and hip hop. Otherwise i think i'm gonna be doing a fair number of shots on friday!

Yay for the Bop!

funny you should mention that. for the last hour or so there will be a retro themed music night.

as for your comment about lack of variety i think that you are wrong. the fact is that people only really remeber the *bop* ish songs (ymca etc) but there is a lot of subtle variation in the music (for example mowhwak played i think im a clone now by wierd al yankavich etc).

i appreciate your opinion in this matter and think that it is great to let us know what people think so as to be able to provide a fun (and safe) atmosphere to chow to the world what student life is all about.

The Bop is cheese. Don't like = move on. There are plenty of other available nights for non-cheese stuff. However, the Bop excels in its ability to mix some newer stuff with old faves and the whole point of it is to be an eclectic, totally random mix of songs. As previous posters have said, any "duff" songs give us a chance to go schmoozing or to get drinks. Most of us in this country grew up with the Bop songs in school so it's great to have one night a week dedicated to that sort of music that the majority seem to be content with, if not totally happy. It's reassuring to know that you can go to Venue1 every Friday night and know what you're going to get and if you're into that sort of thing.

As for rotation, it tends to cause confusion. The number of people I know who've been "bopping" on a non-cheese Friday night and really hated it. As I said, plenty of other nights that other music can be trialled.

I have become a bop addict this last year and love a bit of cheese. However i would love hugely if they would play a bit of dance music later on in the bop. On friday there was only one dance tune and myself and others included were a tad dissapointed. There was no love generation, say say say..... Cheese is great but you do need to throw more into the mix. Have more variety, maybe even sections of music, start cheesy with a bit of killers and r n b etc thrown in, do dance around 1 and then back to cheese to end with?

Please don't change it, I've been a few times when it's not cheesy and it was dead, and I didn't enjoy it at all. You look forward to the cheese.
As far as I'm concerned everynow and then you want a club, and you're sick to death of St Andrews so you go to Fat Sams, and you dance to RnB and dance music, and it's great. But for me and my friends that's not all that often. You want the cheese a lot more than you want the RnB.
Plus, you look stupid dancing to RnB, some people take it too seriously, and others don't know what they're doing, and often your friends end up grinding up against each other and it's your time to make a quick excuse.... Cheese is more fun, everyone looks the same dancing to 5ive, and everyone'll join in with 500 miles, it's great because everyone goes once in a while at least and you bump into people and get excited at the old songs, and no-one takes it seriously.
