The Yah

Postby DrAlex on Sat May 06, 2006 6:41 pm

I thought I knew what a yah was. I see them all the time, I'm friends with some, some people call me one. But I've seen a reference several times now that makes me guess I'm wrong.

The "Wannabe Yah".

The wannabe yah throws off everything I thought I knew about yahness. It suggests that of our bodywarmer-and-pashmina-wearing-Butler&Co-Pimms -enthusiasts are in fact two breeds of a species, and that there is some innate quality of yahness that some people haven't attained. What's the difference? Is there an initiation one must go through to become True Yah? Is this just St Andrews' categorisation culture gone mad?

"Yahs" are people who have always been like that. "Wannabe yahs" are people who are not born yahs but, as the name suggests, want to be like them.

Of course, it is perfectly possible to have been to a private school, to speak with a home counties accent, to have a trust fund and to do and wear everything associated with "yahs" without falling into either of these categories.

Or you can wear pashminas, drink Pimms and shop and Butler and co, without being a yah...

The terms 'American yah' and 'wannabe yah' are often interchangeable. I think it has something with being 'born into it' as Anon. put it. Many could wear a pashmina, shop at Butler&Co, drink Pimms and put on their best impression of a home counties accent (I've heard many a New Englander try this - it's hillarious!), and even have the just-off-daddy's-yacht-hair, but still, somehow, never be a yah, because at the end of the day - they're 'new money', dahling!

The fact that you sent away for a free pashmina shows that you're not a Yah....you're just like the rest of us!

What is wrong with liking Pimms? It's a refreshing, nice, different summer drink that makes a change from beer.

As for Butler wraps, a 'hearty stopper' wrap at £2.50 is the same price as a 6 inch subway (unless you get subway of the day) and the ingredients is fresher, more filling and it's a nicer lunch.

Why o why, if you like Pimms once a year in the summer and somtimes have a cheeky Butler wrap between lectures, are you a yah?

Am I the only one that had never even heard of Pimms let alone drink it before coming to Uni? I'm sure not one single bottle has ever made into Lancashire

Yep, you're the only one.

Several bottles have made it through Lancashire with me.

I was about to say, I've had Pimms when I'm home and I didn't have to smuggle the bottles cross the county border...

Couldn't be further from the truth, so congratulations on further proving my point on how this university thrives off its stereotyping.
Or maybe that was just an attempt at humour.

And once again profound ignorance of an organisation does not stand in the way of having fixed opinions on it. Congratulations!

KK and Lumsden are a bit like celebrities: Interest is generated on irrational gossip/insulting. As soon as we learn about them and have to be rational, they'll disappear.

Up until I read this thread, I had no idea that buying your lunch at Butler & co and drinking Pimms were part of the St Andrews yah steriotype, and I am in third year. I guess that I am getting too old to keep up with these crazy trends!

I'm getting the feeling that "yah" is a transient thing. Yahness is in the eye of the beholder as it were.

My definition of a yah is someone who has not been sufficiently well brought up to know that they are not automatically better than everyone else due to their education, wealth, or ancestry.

In this sense, all yahs are 'wannabe yahs'.

As a general rule (there are, of course, exceptions), anybody who flaunts their wealth is far too gauche to be genuine. I do wish the 'yahs' would realise this.

The 'poshest' people I know are as far removed from the generic yah as Michael Carroll is from Prince Charles, and would not dream of displaying the lack of manners most yahs demonstrate in their determination to be considered superior.
