Revision Music

Postby Raindance on Tue May 09, 2006 9:07 pm

I've never started a thread this lame before but I was suddenly inspired:

What song or album best sums up the way you're feeling about exams?

Mine is Only Time by Lemon Jelly.

Agreed, anything by Chopin, especially the Nocturnes.

Summing up feelings? Westwood's March to Doom would be good.

Like most other people, I can't work with music that has words in it, at least not words in English I can make out - they just distract me. I just loaded a "study" playlist onto my MP3 player as it seems assignments are looming again and it's time to lock myself away in the library for the next few weeks. We have;

* Aaron Copland - Billy the Kid, Rodeo Suite & Appalachian Spring
* Vivaldi - The 4 seasons
* Mussorgsky - Pictures at an exhibition
* Mozart - Horn Concerto #4 (cos Mozart makes you smarter, right?)
* Smetana - Ma Vlast
* Beethoven - Piano Sonata 14 "moonlight" and Symphony #6 "pastoral"
* Karl Jenkins - Adiemus 1

and some other miscellaneous bits and bobs. Iv'e a feeling most of this will need changed though, it's far too rousing, I usually stick to piano and baroque pieces for studying and working. And Einaudi is a MUST.

Mogwai, Four Tet, Stephen Fretwell and, for some reason, Inspiral Carpets.

Regina Spektor. Anything by her is the most work-inspiring stuff EVER. Well, except for 'Fidelity' which is my happy song so it just makes me bounce around for four minutes, but other than that.

Hmm, a friend of mine and I created a parody of "Yesterday" by the Beatles a few years ago, the general premise being that "Yesterday, all my exams seemed so far away..." and so on. That song kind of sums up what I'm thinking at the moment.

Has to be film soundtracks- but without any words. You can't go wrong with LOTR or Pirates of the Carribean.

I quite enjoy setting whatever mp3 player I happen to be using to randomly play through all my music, you can get some interesting mixes that way. The irregularity of it kepps you awake quite nicely, specially when you can go from something quiet like LOTR to System of A Down. Must remember to keep my speakers turned down.

Been listening to Pearl Jam's Ten quite a bit this exam time, but Operation Ivy's song Knowledge always makes me laugh at exam time...

I don't play any different music from normal--just my randomised collection until it hits upon an album I want to listen to through.

I just discovered an unopened CD of Dvorak's Piano Quintets on my shelf. Pretty damn good music. Also listening to Shostakovich Piano Concertos today.
