The Letter E

Postby Thackary on Wed Jul 12, 2006 2:46 pm

There once was a fellow named Ernest Vincent Wright, who challenged himself to write a story with a difference. He chose to exclude the letter E from his story.

5 months later on, he ended up with a story he called "Gadsby".

As you'll see, his introduction features many instances of the letter E (as does mine), but the story itself (over 50,000 words long) doesn't feature it once.

I challenge fellow Sinners to respond to this post, offering your comments, but without using the letter E!

Not just a curiosity of a book, but also a top notch bit of writing; Gadsby's stands out among its rivals, a truly stunning work of fiction.

How's that?

It is a pity that he can never actually put his full name to the book, given his first name is 'Ernest'. That's if he is really going to be anal about it of course.

I find big limitations in this kind of writing - but it is a truly fascinating plan and I wish him luck with continuing in this way.

Given that he's been dead for almost 70 years, it seems unlikely that he'll continue.

Perhaps you could try a 50,000 word story without punctuation or capitalisation as an homage to the late E.V. Wright?

Your main difficulty is lack of particular pronouns, making it difficult to say this or that particular thing. Its limiting so you will always apply similar words such as particular which I do put down a lot anyway. Also lots and lots of long ways round to say a thing thats not particularly fascinating. This just sounds similar to a load of bollocks. It so stilts your writing. I don't know how Wright did it.

If you did hail from York or its locality your local twang might assist, with t'this and t'that.

Apart from acting as a trial in using synonyms, what point is in it?
