if this line up is for the freshers, and gina G was at eurovision in 1998, then wouldn't the freshers be about 9-10 when she was 'big'?

would they be a bit young at the time to remember her fondly?

It's still a song that is widely recognised though - most runs up to Eurovision include it being played a lot, plus it is a staple of private hire DJs.

Gina G was in eurovision in '96. She might have had some nostalgia value for my year, aged 12-14ish, if you'd had no musical taste at that age. She sucked then and a decade passing has not made her suck less.

Also, you got Echo and the Bunnymen, Duran Duran, the later years of Supertramp, et al.

I saw Echo and the Bunnymen live a month ago. I've never been so bored in my entire life. Except perhaps watching Nick Drake the year before. Good God that was bad.

It would be. Nick Drake has been dead for 32 years.

Woops, spectacularly stupid typo. I mean't Nick Cave who, for the record, is crap.

How about a decent band? We had snow patrol a few years back, granted it was before they were big, and in my freshers we even had KT Tunstall.

No, you didn't ;-p

And come on, a hypnotist?? It's not Butlins.

The hypnotist sells out TWO shows every year! (I didn't look that closely but if Graeme did programme three shows, I bet all three will sell out too)
Why do so many people want to see that show? You may not remember back to that time in your life but the MAJORITY of new students do not want to be smashed drunk and the hypnotist offers the perfect way to have a comedy laugh of a time with a bunch of "friends" you met yesterday and start making those treasured memories forever. Afterall, new students include everyone from the nervous, the foreign, the abstainers from alcohol for religious reasons and a LOT of people who are underage.

Wait until you're a 4th year. I swear that people will still be reminiscing with happy memories of the hypnotist show in your first year.

Okay, so there is something for retro discos, as much as I personally despise them (the 80s sucked big time as far as i'm concerned, 87 being the good year ;) ) but 2 in the same week? Overkill I think. One would've been fine, two is a bit much.

The comedy night actually sounds good, and i've heard the hypnotist is pretty good although it's not my thing. Admittedly Gina G does sound a bit dodgy but then I'm not going to it. End of the day, go or don't go, your choice.

The comedy is always stupidly popular, I remember the queues of people from last year trying to get the final few tickets. People should get their tickets early to avoid disappointment.

The hypnotist sold out both shows last year, and some people insisted on being in the audience, even if they had to stand. Seated capacity was exceeded, and they crammed as many people in as the venue capacity would allow.

Same for the comedians.

Three hypnotist shows this year - I reckon all three will be sold out again.

The Retro nights aren't in the same week - they're a week apart. Perhaps the start of a weekly retro night?

Big names = big prices. Would you want to spend £15 on a ticket for one night during a whole week of events?

Absolutely! I was with friends at the back of the queue that stretched up the stairwell to the second floor trying to get the last few seats for the final show.

The line-up is pretty damn good in my opinion - there's not a night's entertainment that I don't want to go to, which is more than last year or the year before. This year has a much cheesier ring to it, like my first year (remember Pat Sharpe and Toby Anstis?!) and I had a fantastic first week back then. That may not appeal to all, but as others have mentioned, each event is one night in one week of a whole university year, and is primarily designed to integrate the first year students into the social side of university life. If the rest of us happen to have a great time along the way, then it's an added bonus!

Sorry, I actually don't care about the rest of the nights because I see that Scott Mills is going to be involved.

Seriously, Union peeps, nice one. I'm actually quite excited now. (Although would be nice to see what sort of prices we'd be looking at paying for each night? Any ideas?)

Ditto.

My boyfriend goes to Imperial College London (not exactly a small University and not in the middle of no where either) and says that our line-up is a lot better than theirs has been for the past two years at least.

I've just had a look at the Edinburgh and Glasgow Union sites and there doesn't seem to be anything or anyone amazing on there either.

I agree with Adam Fellows. As someone who these events are meant for, I'm actually rather excited!

...But then she does have you as her aunt!

I still think Gina G will be a hit, and I'm looking forward to it!

How do you know the future you've got now is the same future you're going to have if something in the past is different from the last time you went back to the future?

Not a bad lineup. Looks to be a fun freshers week.

Why do people all have to be so negative about the whole thing? So we're not going to be entertained by ten days of the biggest acts today. By happy coincidence the entire budget for the year hasn't been spent already! If you don't paticularly like one day's lineup there are a hundred other things to do. Most, if not all the halls have concurrent events running throughout the week. Not to mention various houseparties and societies events running as well.

My problem is that a lot of the good events seem to be running at times when I'm already doing something else :(

Now some people weren't happy about the content of that last post. And we can't have someone not happy. Not on the internet.
